when I am on 50.045.05 with PRE on I hear a low continuous tone. With
PRE off it disappears. When I twist the shift, the tone gets lower or higher in frequency. (lower when shift to the right) When I switch the filter from FL5 (500) to FL4 (2100) the tone appears at 50.045.95. The tone obviously comes from inside the transceiver, because switching the antenna does not change it. Can anybody this phenomenon? 73! de Werner OE9FWV -- "Einige halten Fussball für einen Kampf auf Leben und Tod. Aber ich versichere Ihnen, dass es weit ernster ist." I observe the same conditions although the frequency is slightly different - probably due to different filter offsets and CW pitch. After looking, I see similar "signals" at 50.030 and 50.078 that change tone with the "shift" control. In all three cases, the responses are the same with either antenna or no antenna. The response drops if the attenuator is engaged. 73, ... I did not look any higher but same patter, they exist only when using sharp filter, in my case 8-pole 400 and 250 Hz. They are weak and with antenna attached hardly noticeable. There is also one extremely weak on 1819.0 kHz. Have not checked the other bands 73 Len SM7BIC _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. hi all,
I have to add: it is only in CW, with PREamp on. characteristic is that moving the shift alters the height of the tone. I found one on 50.030, 50.046, 50.078, 50.094 VE3NFK schrieb am 13 May 2008 um 5:12: > > Nothing heard here SN 709.. > 73 > John VE3NFK > > DL5OCD wrote: > > > > No, in my case the reveiver is quiet on this frequency. > > > > 73 > > Michael > > -- You know you're getting old when you stop to tie your shoes and wonder what else you can do while you're down there. I have found the 50.046.96 birdie on my K3 #732. In CW mode it does
disappear when I switch the preamp off. However, in USB the tone is there with the preamp on or off. In only have the stock 2.7 KHz filter. I'm glad to hear that there's only one little birdie of concern to the
list. This is a major victory :) The K3 uses down-conversion to a low first I.F. (so we can offer narrowband crystal filters). It's nearly impossible to eliminate all birdies using this kind of conversion scheme. Weak birdies generally arise from sum and difference products of VHF harmonics of the signal sources -- an unavoidable side-effect of a high-level switching mixer. But we made sure the birdies were minimized within ham bands by carefully choosing the I.F. (8.215 MHz), using integral low-pass filtering in the mixer switching path, and shielding the front panel module. 73, Wayne N6KR --- http://www.elecraft.com _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I did not look at the other bands ;-) but seriously: on 6m the band here is ususally very quiet and I was searching the beacon band for any signal so I discovered these tones. And Russ is right, I can hear them also on USB of course with a frequency offset. 73! de Werner OE9FWV -- No beer, wine, or liquor will ever touch my lips...I use a straw.
