Re: K3 compatible Pan adaptors

Bob - W0GI
Many do it with an SDR like the softrock, but it isn't plug and play.

I beleive the method with the lowest effort is the LP-Pan. But the kit is $175 and assembled is $225. For software, there is a special version of PowerSDR, PowerSDR-IF. I do know that the LP-Pan gives you the ability for a second receiver, but that is limited to the same band and within the bandwidth of the soundcard you use.  Not like a real K3 sub receiver, but a nice addition even with the limitations.

I was lucky enough to find an LP-Pan on EBay for $135 with free shipping. It should arrive on the big brown truck tomorrow, and I am making cables this evening.

I already have an external PreSonus Firebox sound interface, that seems to work with LP-Pan, so I may be in business pretty quick. It is only 96kHz/24bit, but that will do for now, until I find a deal on a 196kHz card.

I am looking forward to this addition.

Not being facetious, but you can take the IF output from the K3 and feed it
to the antenna of an IC756P3 or IC7600, etc.  Just tune the Icom to the IF
freq of the K3. An expensive panadapter - yes.  Just make sure the Icom
never transmits or the K3 will be history.  I guess this has been done with
K2, etc.  I have an IC7600 but have never tried it yet.  I also have the
LP-Pan.  But if I want SDR, I'll just use my Flex3000.

As you can see, I am an equal opportunity ham - Yaesu, ICOM, Elecraft, and
Flex, not to forget Kenwood.

I still favor the K3 above the others.

Re: K3 compatible Pan adaptors

David Gilbert

I kept my old 756Pro when I upgraded to a K3, and I've done exactly that.  It works, of course, but there is no comparison in performance to what you would get from an LP-Pan or even a Softrock.  The 756Pro spectrum display is interesting to look at, but the resolution is really poor for anything useful.

Re: K3 compatible Pan adaptors

Joe Subich, W4TV-4

If you want a fairly simple "plug, load, configure and go" there
is the SDR-IQ with Spectravue software.  The combination uses the
K3 IF output and provides up to a 180 KHz "window" around the K3
operating frequency.

Re: K3 compatible Pan adaptors

Bob - W0GI
I hadn't seen the SDR-IQ. Pretty nice little SDR.

What is really cool from the search, is this video of it interfaced to an old TS-830S boat anchor.

the TS-830S is my favorite boat anchor, and with a bandscope, it really cool. :<)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpI2XNI_xsY

Since the SDR-IQ doesn't need a soundcard, it isn't much more then an LP-Pan plus soundcard, an you get a nice little SDR receiver to boot.

Ain't technology great.....

I've seen several of those SDR-IQ videos and they all show a huge amount of
"grass" jumping around. I use the LP-PAN with PowerSDR-IF and see none of
that grass. I can see signals as weak or sometimes weaker than I can copy.
Does Spectragram or Spectravue (whatever is used) offer a way to smooth
things out?

Re: K3 compatible Pan adaptors

P.B. Christensen
Steve,

SDR-IQ with SpectraVue allows for menu changes in FFT Averaging and
smoothing.   With some menu changes, the presentation can look comparable to
the PowerSDR displays.
