K3 f/w updates and Keyspan USB to serial port adapter

John E. Reiser
Hello,

Can anyone tell me definitively whether or not my Keyspan USB-to-serial-port adapter will be suitable for downloading the K3 firmware updates?

Thanks and 73,

John, W2GW

RE: K3 f/w updates and Keyspan USB to serial port adapter

Dick Dievendorff
I can't make promises, but it has a very good chance of working well.
Keyspan has a pretty good reputation.  I have one here that I'm going to
test with a couple of computers.

My experience has been that all USB adapters will work with some computers,
and no USB adapters will work with all computers.  My experience with serial
ports is that they tend to be much more robust.

I'm continuing to make improvements in USB to Serial Adapter error recovery
which help with some marginal cases.

I'll send another note after I've done my testing with a Sony Vaio laptop I
have here as well as my desktop system.

RE: K3 f/w updates and Keyspan USB to serial port adapter

Dick Dievendorff
John, I just loaded my K3's firmware successfully with a Keyspan USA-19H USB
Serial Adapter.  I used a Sony Vaio VGN-FZ150E laptop with Windows Vista.  I
first installed device drivers from the Keyspan web site.

However the Keyspan USA-19H I have here has a 3' cable, and the fasteners on
the DB-9 connector are "nuts", so it won't mate with the back of the K3,
which also has nuts.  You'll need a M-F serial cable with screw connectors
on each end.

This fastener gender issue is pretty common with USB adapters; the only one
I've seen that mates correctly (has screws on the DB-9 end) is the KUSB sold
by Elecraft.  There may be others, I just haven't seen them.  For me a 6'
serial extension cord is not an issue at all, so it doesn't matter that much
to me.  Your preferences may vary...

Not definitively, unless you can find someone with the identical
computer and operating system to try it!

However, Keyspan has a very good reputation and chances are the answer
will be yes. It depends more on your computer than anything else.
There's been lots of work done on the K3 Utility to make it compatible
with all kinds of USB/Serial adapters, OS's, etc.

Hi John,

As Dick and Vic have said, there are no guarantees.
But your chances are very good that the Keyspan will
work fine for you. I'm using the USA-19H and I've had
no problems with it loading the firmware updates using
a Shuttle PC running Windows XP. I also use it on my
four different Apple Macs without problems.

Hi Dick,

I have a serial m-f straight-through cable that has screws on both DB-9s.
However, I see from the picture of the K3 rear panel that the RS232
connector is male.  I looked at my Keyspan USA 19HS adapter and found that
it is also male.  So to make it work I would need a f-f serial cable.

I think that I should order a KUSB, which is exactly what I was trying to
determine.

I appreciate yours and everyone's help with this.

Better still, make yourself a universal gender-changer/extension-cable.
Buy two male DB9 connectors for ribbon cable, and two female, then
squeeze them onto a foot of 9-way ribbon cable like this:

M==F======================M==F

Take great care about the polarity and orientation of the connectors -
they must follow "pin 1 to pin1" all the way.

It's a very handy thing to have around the shack.

The K3's rear-panel RS-232 connector is female. A M-F serial cable works
fine to extend a USB to Serial adapter.
