K3 failure

Alan Grant
I don't know what I have done to my K3, no 5779 I was trying to update the
Beta 4.51 and the computer just filled through all the attempts to connect
on different ports at different baud rates, and could not connect, next
thing I know, the transmit light just keeps on flashing the dial lights
went out and I can see mcu ld faintly I cannot turn the

K3 off with its power switch I think I nearly had a heart attack. I have
attempted to find that fault in the manual, and cannot seem to find an
error that matches my fault.

HELP PLEASE, what should I do, or where do I look, has anyone seen this
fault before

Desperately seeking assistance.

Alan Grant VK4KO

I need my K3 back

No trees were damaged in sending this Email, however, many electrons were
inconvenienced

Hi Alan,

Sounds like the firmware upgrade didn't take--possibly due to a
brownout--and has to be retried.

First get out of KX3 Utility and power the PC off/on, in case there's
an issue with the serial ports.

Next, unplug the K3, wait a few seconds, and plug it back in. If the
firmware has to be reloaded, you'll see "MCU LD" on VFO B and one LED
will flash. At this point try running KX3 Utility again; it should
load the new firmware.

If this doesn't help, send as much detail as you can to k3support.

Sorry, major typo. Yes, you need K3 Utility.

I think the utilities are smarter than I am at this time of day and
would warn you if you got them mixed up.

See K3 Utility Help, Troubleshooting MCU Load Failure.

Do not despair, this is recoverable.

Hi Alan,

I had a K3 load lockup a few weeks ago and I used the technique described in the help menu in the K3 Utility Program. Search for MCU Boot Loader Troubleshooting. Full instructions will be displayed.

I also removed the RS232 link between the K3 and P3 so that the K3 had a direct serial connection to the computer. But that may be overkill.

I know what caused my particular lockup. I tried to cancel a load sequence after it began because of a stupid impulse. I know I'll continue to do stupid things but I won't do that particular stupid thing again.
