K3 feature request

Tony Scesny

Arnie:     I have to agree with you.  In the "old"  days we used to call
it "going Barefoot".   Every AMP  has a STBY switch.  I just checked
ALS-600 and sure enough it HAS one.  I'm not one to advocate making
something easy more complicated.  From Wayne's tone about upcoming dual
receiver mods, it sounds like he is using up memory space pretty
quickly.  But...hey...lets keep the ideas flowing.   It never ceases to
amaze me what may come from them.

And  David... I love your Power on Banner.   Just the right fit too.

Tony,

Yes, the 600 has a standby switch.  When changing bands and freqs frequently
it would be useful not to go through a bunch of manual switching. Also
consider that some of us may not have the amp in close proximity to operate
the standby switch easily.  What's the harm in a request and who knows if it
isn't already on the designers mind?

Well...not every amp.  My Alpha 70V has no standby switch.   From the off
position, the amp either goes right into active CW or SSB operating mode --
with no warm-up time (the PA tube uses a directly-heated filament).

If I want to bypass the amp, I must press the OFF button.  And when its off,
the entire amp is really off.  Sure, this is not indicative of most amps
made, but this example may not be the only exception out there.

Still, the PTT menu issue is not important enough for me to care one way or
the other.

Re: K3 feature request

Paul,

Thanks for the additional comment.

Agreed this not as important as the much awaiting dual band receive which is
just around the corner.  That will do more good than the amp issue.  And
besides, once band conditions improve I won't be using the amp much anyway,
didn't have one until a month ago, have to use it all the time on low band
SSB to talk within 150 miles most early evenings.

Bill,

I suspect that the reason this may not be tackled near-term is that a
small percentage of users would need / use it.

For me, I don't see that there's any advantage to being able to push a
button on the radio over pushing a button on the amp to accomplish the
same purpose.

If you're amp is remote, just put an external switch in the PTT line
between the K3 and your amp and mount it adjacent to the K3.

HMMMMMMM!

For some of the features that are not well apparent while using the K3 while either a "ANT-
tuner" and a Linear amp, needing a "CONSTANT-TONE" like I wanted was EASY!!

Just procure a "HEIL-FOOTSWITCH"!!!!!!!!!  Two leads come out of the FS, one goes to
the 1/4" KEY-jack (on rear panel) the other goes to the "PTT-JACK" (rear panel as well),
WHAT CAN BE EASIER THAN THAT??

KEY offers tone for ant. tuner and amp and PTT jack offers FS operation for SSB, rather
than crummy VOX!!! And since my amp is QSK using the jack from amp to rig (key-out) jack
provided the QSK keying function!!!

The problem was solved by myself though a few helpful hints out here did lead us in the
right direction!!!

Very nice idea.  I have a foot switch but it isn't the Heil version.  I will
check that one out.

Re: K3 feature request

Mark W2OR
In reply to this post by JIM DAVIS-11
K3 Feature Request:

-- When in SPLIT mode, have an (optional) indicator that flashes as a reminder to the operator that one is in split.  Either a dim light, or a LCD panel indicator that blinks.  As is now, it's soooo easy to forget you're in split ... at least for those of us who are (practically) over the hill...  this feature would be optional 'on' or 'off'.

-- A tuning feature allowing a frequency change of every 5-kHz, for instantanious tuning of the SW broadcast channels.  Nice feature for the Sub Rx, too, and for those SWL'ers who continue to gravitate to the K-3.  This would also draw additional attention to the K3 in the SWL magazines and web sites.

-- Hardware:  A clip or stop arrangement on the 12-volt power supply line plug, so the cord doesn't get accidentally disconnected or otherwise slip out.

-- Hardware:  As an optional accessory, somewhat heavier tuning knobs for Main and Sub, as Optional accessories.  (gulp)

-- Hardware:  Matching cabinet of the exact same size and color as the K-3's, housing two front-facing 'stereo' speakers (for Main and Sub) and other goodies of which there could be many.  Lots of options here.

END
