K3 headset question

KB1PXD
Greetings,
My K3 will be shipped out any day now! (woo-hoo)
I've decided to pickup a Heil headset, but I'm not sure if I should
go with the Elecraft proset-k2, or just run out to HRO and grab
a proset-4, etc.  Questions:

1.) If I decide to pick one up at at HRO, can I just pickup the adapter
that's pinned out for Kenwood radios? (8-pin)

2.) Does the Elecraft proset-k2 come already wired for the K3 with
no soldering required?

** I'm trying to avoid any soldering if possible.

Any pros/cons of either of these choices?

Thanks!

Bill

You won't need an adapter.  The K3 has a mono mic jack at the rear of the unit
for the mono 1/8" plug mic plug like the one on the end of the pro series mic
cable and a stereo jack at the rear for the headphones.  I have a Proset Plus!
and that's how I have it connected, although I do have a Kenwood adapter for it
also.

Yes.  I believe the one from Elecraft has the same plugs as described above, but
have not seen one.  I'll bet some one will correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: K3 headset question

Brett Howard
Does anyone know of an adapter that will take a Kenwood 8-pin mic jack
and set things up so it will fit into the 3.5mm mic jack on the back?
Or is this one of those things that I'd have to make...

I just use a cheap PC headset.  Works fine, no soldering.  Just plug it in the back jacks and set the mike for bias.

Yes. Several years ago, I bought five Plantronics computer headset/mic
combos at a hamfest, and made connector adapters so I could use them with
my ham rigs. All were different -- I suspect they were product samples. All
worked fine and produced very clean competitive audio with every radio that
I hooked them up to, including a K2, TS850, and IC746. I paid about $25 for
all five. Unless you're feeling rich, you don't need a Heil headset!

Ok, so correct me if I'm mistaken.  If I order the proset-K2 through
Elecraft for my K3, I'll have all necessary connections to operate the
headset?  However, I'm assuming that I'll be limited to VOX and no
PTT until I pickup a pedal, etc., which I assume will attach the existing
headset?

Thanks,
- Bill

RE: K3 headset question

Dick Dievendorff
Yes, your Proset-K2 assumptions are correct.

The PTT footswitch / handswitch should have a 1/4" mono phone plug to fit
the adapter if you want to use the K3 front panel Foster (8-pin) connector.
The Heil FS-1 Footswitch (no longer sold by Heil) footswitch and Heil Hand
Switch have a 1/4" mono phono plug. The current Heil FS-2 footswitch has
both a 1/4" mono phono plug and an RCA plug (and some sequencing for rig/amp
combinations so that the contacts on one plug close before the other).
There are other footswitches available, use your favorite internet search
engine to find lots.

If you disconnect the adapter from the Proset-K2, you can plug the
microphone and headphone connectors into the back of the K3.  Then you'd
want a PTT footswitch with an RCA connector to match the RCA PTT IN
connector on the back of the K3.  This keeps the front panel of the K3
"clean" and you don't have connectors lying on the desk in front of the
radio.  The "normal" situation, with rigs that only have a front-panel
microphone & headphone connector, is to have a 6" dongle plugged into the
8-pin Foster connector on the front of the radio coming straight out from
the front panel, the headphones plugged into the front of the radio, and at
the end of the dongle are a 1/8" plug/jack combination for the microphone
connector and a 1/4" plug/jack combination for the footswitch.  These can
get into the way.  They're thought by some to be unsightly.

Dick, K6KR
