K3 mod history?

CX7TT
Does Elecraft keep a history of each K3 manufactured and the follow on
mods? Tracked by serial number? My #250 has been back to the mothership
several times for repairs/mods etc. I am not sure if my KXV3 has been
changed to the 'A' or not. Thinking about adding the P3 to the lineup
and not sure if rig is ready or needs the A mod.

Re: K3 mod history?

Dick Dievendorff
The P3 does not require the KXV3A, the original KXV3 works fine.  The main addition for the "A" has to do with a new TMP connector for the K144XV.

Re: K3 mod history?

Julian, G4ILO
Was there not a modification required to the original KXV3 on the IF output, a resistor change or something? It was in the back of my mind that I would need to do this mod if I ever got a P3 or other panadapter. (Though presumably the KXV3A which is on its way to me with a KXV144 doesn't need any modification.)

Re: K3 mod history?

Don Cunningham
Yes, there was a "mod" and you get the resistor needed with the P3.  You are
correct though, the KXV3A does not need the mod.

There is a single resistor mod on the RF board for greater IF gain for the P3. No mod to the KXV3 or KXV3A, but the P3 does use the IF out connector, so one of the KXV3 or KXV3A is used.

I believe that AFTER November 2009 !! all K3"s shipped had the Mod fitted as standard.

Ah, that was probably the one I was thinking about. As it affected the IF output I probably assumed it was on the KXV3. Pity I don't have the required value of 1/8W resistor handy or I could have done the mod at the same time as I added the jack for powering the KXV144.

Re: K3 mod history?

Dick Dievendorff
The mod requires removal of just the front half of the bottom cover, so it is about as easy as could be for a SMT part replacement.

Re: K3 mod history?

Matt Zilmer
In reply to this post by CX7TT
Keeping a DCM-style record of each K3 would be virtually impossible.
Factory-installed K3  options could be tracked by the original
buyer/owner/builder but not by serial number, since many owners have
multiple radios.  More to the point, options are also
bought/sold/traded in and out of K3's.  The best example of this is
filters, but it applies equally to major subassemblies like the KXV3/A
or K144XV, etc.

I had a brief discussion with Eric about this in October.  When a K3
(or K2, etc.) arrives back at the shop, the service person inventories
its installed options.  But there isn't much more than a rev check of
the option module(s) since many have multiple revs.

The number of fielded radios probably far exceeds the number Elecraft
staff see for service or new installs in the shop, and there's no way
to know what options each K3 has installed from afar.  Unless Elecraft
has developed some unique form of TelePresence.  :)

The P3 works best with the IF gain mod installed.  You can find mods
at www.elecraft.com, click on K3 Mods + App Notes.  It's the second
mod shown from the top of the table.  The mod is a simple resistor
change that is easily performed in the field, and parts are available
gratis (plus postage, I think).

I've done all my own mods, and few are "challenging" for a moderately
skilled kit builder.  Mods aren't for everyone however, and YMMV.  A
few require patience and studying the problem before jumping in, but
they are carefully crafted for ease and accessibility, and documented
extensively (mit photos yet!), and fairly easy to perform.
