Would it be possible for the K3 to provide 48volt "Phantom" power for profesional condensor microphones?
Thanks! |
Bob,
While that would be a nice addition, I think it is not possible inside the K3 - there is no source of 48 VDC available. As an alternative, consider one of the small audio mixers - the Behringer 602 (now Xenyx 802) provides 48 volt phantom power for 2 microphones and 2 additional stereo channels of mixing. I find it quite useful in the hamshack - although I do not use the pro mics with it, it does have that capability and is inexpensive. 73, Don W3FPR Bob W9RFS wrote: > Would it be possible for the K3 to provide 48volt "Phantom" power for > profesional condensor microphones? > Thanks! > _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Hi Bob,
We do not have this capability in the K3. Since we run off of 13.8V it would take a redesign to accomplish that. 73, Eric Bob W9RFS wrote: > Would it be possible for the K3 to provide 48volt "Phantom" power for > profesional condensor microphones? > Thanks! > _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. However, there are a number of DC to DC converters on the market. I've
used Artesyn a number of times in solar power installations. Never a complaint, and the oldest install is just over 7 years in operation now. Digikey and Mouser both stock Artesyn, and there is room in the chassis for it. Just a thought. Pick a DC-DC converter for the 8 to 16 Vin range, to give 48VDC out. Get the power rating that applies to your mic. Probably pretty low. matt, W6NIA K3 # 24 On Mon, 07 Jan 2008 16:39:08 -0800, you wrote: >Hi Bob, > >We do not have this capability in the K3. Bob & others, I think the easiest way to get 48 VDC phantom power for a "real" mic is to put a small mixing board or mic preamp between the mic and rig. I have a (yuck, spit) Behringer board that cost me $100 about 10 yrs ago that provides phantom power on 4 channels plus some EQ and, of course, mixing capabilities. Or I can use my Mackie board to do the same. That's how I run good mic into my rig. If you don't want a mixer, you can get several different mic preamps that will provide the phantom voltage the mic needs. - Keith N1AS - - K2 5411.ssb.100 - - K3 Wave 3 - -----Original Message----- > Would it be possible for the K3 to provide 48volt "Phantom" power for > profesional condensor microphones? > Thanks! _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I have a preamp with phantom power made by Samson I believe it was $48. I noticed that Ramsey Kits has it listed in their latest catalog.

It would probably be easier to purchase an inexpensive mixer from a company like Behringer. many of these have switchable on/off phantom power supplies. This would also give the ability to introduce other components into the "mix" as well. Some or most of theses also include a simple EQ built in as well. This may also complement the EQ included in the K3 nicely. I will add a post as to how these mesh with the K3 when mine arrives. I hope this helps. Have a great week.
