K3 power supply

Gary Smith
I've been re-considering my power supply. I'm using a Heathkit PS
which is a 20 amp linear supply. I just looked inside it and it's
definitely showing the effects of age. It hasn't been used in quite a
long time as I've used a TenTec supply with my Corsair & Omni since
day one.

Ihave a few things runing on 12V and they probably draw 2-5 amps on a
steady draw. With the K3 I suppose my requirement would be 22A so I'm
looking at a 27 or so amp load. I'm currently using wall warts to
supply the 12V peripherals and would like to unclutter my station and
meet all my "12V" needs.

I'm considering several power supplies & looking at eHam reviews I
see Jetstream. They have high reviews and make a nicely affordable
28A for $79 and 45 amp power supply for $149.

Anyone have any experience with these & the K3?

I'm thinking the larger one might be a good choice in that the
components wouldn't be stressed at my station. I do prefer low
stress...

Any thoughts on these supplies?

Hope Santa was good to you!

Gary

Gary,
I've been using a Progressive Dynamics RV supply, based on
recommendations from WB6ZQZ and others here:
http://www.hsfdg.org/wiki/DcPowerSystem

I first used an AGM battery and a Battery Tender / 5A solar panel
system, but found a bit of sag.
I still use this for backup.
So I switched to a Gamma HPS-1a, which I still have and use for
traveling, but it didn't do well for me on PSK or MFSK because the
average current draw is greater than 5A, which is what it has.
But recently I switched the the Progressive Dynamics supply, in parallel
with the 80AH AGM (still with 5A solar backup) and so far it's working
well for me.

I use a JTPS28M that I have had for two years.  I usually run two HF transceivers and a two meter transceiver on receive.  For the past 5 months, one of the HF transceivers has been an Elecraft K3.  Of course, I never transmit on more than one.  If I were to buy another supply, it would be a JetStream.

Astron RS-50 may be the one.  No worries here, with a ton if extras
powered from it.  At a 40 Amp load, I see a 0.15V droop to 13.5VDC.

No stress.

K3 power supply

Ken Kopp-3
A conventional Astron is hard to beat.  I've had three
running here for a number of years without being turned
off.  I've also sold/installed hundreds of 'em in two-way
radio service.

I wouldn't be interested in -anyone's- switching supply.

I use a big battery that I bought at Costco for $75, float-charged
by a 10A switching power supply that I bought at a hamfest for $10.
I had to add RFI filtering to it. This keeps up with my K3 driving
my Titan amp in very heavy contesting (30-35w from the K3), and I
can easily get full output from the K3 when I run barefoot.

This rig has two HUGE advantages. First, it's VERY efficient, only
drawing about 400mA from the power line when it's floating the
battery at about 4A and running the radio and accessories. My
Astrons draw about 5 times that just sitting there with no load.
With California rates for electrical power, that's a very nice
difference. Second, it's a pretty beefy UPS!

Jim K9YC

I was sold on the idea of switched mode power supplies and mainly used
one of the later model Samlex 1223 supplies with the factory fitted
extra EMC components. You've guessed, it was fine for a while then I
noticed a wandering "burble" on 80m and it was radiated from the PSU.
Maybe the components deteriorated or something changed on the antenna,
in any event it's no longer in the shack! I've gone back to a good old
linear supply, it's a Racal branded one from Newmar Electronics in
Newport Beach, CA. I bought it as new old stock (NOS) here in the UK
(Racal were a UK military/commercial radio manufacturer), it's model
115-12-35 CD and rated for 13.8 V at 35 Amp continuous in temps to 85C
ambient, it includes a crowbar, is designed with transmitters in mind
and also has over temp shut down. A real power supply! I use it to
supply both my K3 and an Icom IC910HX for VHF/UHF.

Leigh and All,

I have a Jetstream PS, but it's one of their smaller ones.  However, I find
it to be quite competent and quiet.  My impression is that those good
reviews are accurate.

Thanks for the off & on list suggestions.

>From comments regarding my queery and my own understandings it seems
that for a number of reasons a Linear supply might be the best. I'm
doing my darndest to keep the noise level low on low bands and I'd
like a crowbar in the circuit so I went with the linear Astron VS-35M
which has 25A continuous and 35A intermittent and crowbar.

At $175 & $8 shipping from KJI Electronics it was More pricey than I
wanted to go but that was the best deal I could find and now I have a
solid PS for the K3

Thanks for the input!
