I've been turning my K3 on and off with the front panel switch. Would
leaving it on and turning it on and off from the power supply be problematic? (I turn the P/S on and off from an outlet strip.) Jim,
The K3 has many elements that are computer-like, and those processes must be shut down in proper sequence. The power switch accomplishes that feat nicely. If you turn off the power supply, it is like pulling the plug, and the K3 will be turned off, but you may find a problem when you try to turn it on again because some bits get scrambled. Would you turn off your computer by pulling the plug? Probably not, so treat your K3 in a similar manner. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/6/2011 8:49 AM, N7US wrote: > I've been turning my K3 on and off with the front panel switch. I’d forgotten that. Thanks to you and Don.

Yes. The K3 is very much like a computer and when you press the "OFF"
switch, you initiate a 'shutdown' procedure that eventually turns off the power. All of your settings get saved to memory so that it will start-up next time just the way it was when it was shutdown. ...bc nr4c Quoting N7US <[hidden email]>: > I've been turning my K3 on and off with the front panel switch. The thing I find inconvenient with the K3's power switching is that it
makes remote operation awkward. I hate to leave the radio on when I go away for a few days and want to operate remotely. When I do want to operate that way, I use my Yaesu Mark-V and an AC power controller accessible by computer (USB) and/or telephone link. Simple codes entered via either route connection from the turn the radio on or off. (And, yes, the computer can be controlled in the same way using the telephone link.) Wish I could do this with the K3. --Jeff, K6JW ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
Jeff,
The K3 has an input on the ACC connector called "Remote Power On" on Pin 8. Pull that pin to ground to turn the K3 on. See the Remote Power On description in the manual. There are many computer devices that will provide a switch closure which can be used for this purpose. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/9/2011 2:48 PM, J.
