My K3 sn1693 has just started exhibiting a troubling problem. Operation in CW
when I put key down, the rig shuts off completely. When turning back on, it forgets frequency that was set just prior to shut down. I thought this might be rf in shack, so tried with dummy load and same problem. Any suggestions or has anyone else experienced this behavior? 73, John/K8AZT ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
Check your power connections. It sounds like you may have a loose connection that is OK in receive but as soon as transmit current starts to flow the voltage drops low enough to shut off the K3.

Sounds like you may have problem with your power supply. Monitor power supply voltage while you key the rig, see if it stays correct. If it does, check the power cable and see if the APP connectors are fully engaged and not just partially inserted. Try to key it with reduced power output level and see if it still shuts down. Just for sanity check, if possible, try different power supply and/or power cable. Have you checked your power supply connections? Or the power supply
itself? My K2/100 was doing that in SSB at high power, upgraded to a better supply and problem disappeared. 73, Dennis NJ6G On 5/27/2011 8:25 AM, John/K8AZT wrote: > My K3 sn1693 has just started exhibiting a troubling problem. That happens to me occasionally when I pull a little too much current from
my old 20 amp power supply which goes into current limit, shuts down for a few milliseconds, and then starts again after the K3 has crashed. It happens so fast that it is not apparent what has happened. Just a thought. I would look first for a low voltage under load situation. Maybe a power
connector has worked loose. The VFO frequency is normally saved during the controlled shutdown process initiated by pressing the K3 front panel power button. Pulling the plug doesn't give the firmware a chance to save the VFO frequency in non-volatile storage. 73 de Dick, K6KR -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of John/K8AZT Sent: Friday, May 27, 2011 8:25 AM To: [hidden email] Subject: [Elecraft] K3 shutdown My K3 sn1693 has just started exhibiting a troubling problem. Same thing here. It began right after I had upgraded to 436 but I had a
feeling it might be RF getting into the power supply, an Astron over 20 years old. Haven't checked the voltage under load yet but will do so. lou ----- Original Message ----- From: "John/K8AZT" <[hidden email]> To: <[hidden email]> Sent: Friday, May 27, 2011 11:25 AM Subject: [Elecraft] K3 shutdown > My K3 sn1693 has just started exhibiting a troubling problem.
