K3 test mode

alsopb
Anybody else pretty fed up with the TEST mode being on the MODE button?

The chasing of the PJ's over the past week has really pointed out the
problem in spades.

Any way to defeat the front panel test button or reassign it (like to
the REV button press mode)?

No problem here.  I mean, you have to press and hold to get it to go
into the test mode!  Too much excitement trying to bust all those
pileups on the PJs? Like shooting fish in a barrel from down here.

Congratulations on your fine motor skills.  Just maybe there are a group
of us out there whose skills have significantly degraded over time.

A user defined longer time constant for "PRESS" functions would be a
great help.

Occasionally I accidentally turn a key "press" into a "hold". A user defined
time constant for "hold" would be a nice option for all who want a shorter or
longer "hold" time.

The K3's method of changing bands and modes is pretty balky.
Right from the beginning, I started using the quick memories to
change bands, and the M1, M2, M3 buttons to switch between CW,
SSB and RTTY. This method has been documented on the reflector,
and works quite well. Kudos to the guy who came up with it.

Re: K3 test mode

In reply to this post by alsopb
Hi Brian,

I can appreciate your problem and it would be nice to be able to program or de-program certain button functions. Unfortunately, front panel labeling would be difficult to change. I've often wondered why I have frequently failed to contact stations only to discover that I was in TEST mode. But my problem is different than yours. I failed to take it out of TEST after having intentionally put it into TEST.

I seldom use the MODE switch to actually change modes. I prefer to use the quick memories on the M1 through M4 buttons to change modes within a given band. The K3 Frequency Memory Editor is an excellent tool for that purpose. M1 is always my CW segment, M2 is RTTY, M3 is SSB, and M4 is always PSK. But of course changing modes in this manner also changes the frequency to that which I have programmed the buttons.

Put me down for a "NO".  Any TAP/HOLD button is going to be problematic
if you can't remember the difference.  Personally, I like where TEST is
located because it's up in the same cluster of basic rig control functions.

Curious, I don't find that the case at all.  I guess being used to
various radios with band and mode Up/Down switches the K3 using this
method doesn't bother me.

I'm coming to gribs with the memory system which seems to necessarily
replace the VFO A/B values with the memory information.  My prior
experience (Yaesu rigs) keeps the memories separate from the VFOs even
though the memories are tunable once on the display.  So when I program
a memory I set VFO B to be in the other end of the band.  No biggie as
direct frequency entry is right there.

I may end up taking the felt washers from behind the VFO knobs as
they're quite noisy.  There's my nit to pick.  ;-)

I agree.  The band up/down is really slow.  I use the same memory system, although there are times that the press of the M>V button doesn't "take" and I start sending some message.  PITA when the amp is on the wrong band.

Either that or I hit the V>M button by mistake, for which there needs to be a "cancel" function.

This radio needs some "quick memories" like Kenwood uses. One press saves everything for instant recall.

Drove me nuts too.  I found some different felt at the yard goods store and cut a single washer of larger diameter (the same as the recess in the knob) and then glued it into the knob.  Now there is only one sliding interface; it's quieter and I was almost able to get the feel I prefer.
