K3: vs a Collins S-line RX

Bill Clarke
It has been many years since I sat down to a Collins 75-S3. So long that
I cannot remember if they were really that good.

Anyone out there have a Collins receiver they'd care to compare to a K3?
I am only interested in the quality of the receive
audio. Of course there is no DSP, memories, and all that.

Comments?

Thanks,

Bill W2BLC

Bill, I don't have a Collins but...the "poor man's Collins" aka the
Drake 2B is every bit as sensitive as my K3 to my human ear.  When
things heat up, though, the K3 pulls away at a rapid rate and wins hands
down.   Couldn't afford a Collins back in the 60s and *still* can't
afford one today!!!  73, Stan, WB2LQF

I often wonder if Elecraft  one day will offer a stand alone Receiver.
I don't know how many of you would be interested, but I would certainly get one.

I'm interested if it is better than my 25+ y/o Kenwood R-5000 or the
Ten-Tec R320D (SDR RX) that I am using.

I finally decided to buy the general coverage bandpass module for the K3.
Pretty cheap, when you consider the cost of a good receiver.
I recently rediscovered the thing that got me interested in ham radio - SWL.

Of course, if you're talking about a receiver for the ham bands only, I
love my Drake 2-B and R-4C.

Phil,

Buy a K3 with KBP3 option or a KX3, but don't put it into Transmit - you
will have a superb general coverage receiver.
If you are looking for a lower cost because the transmit capability is
not present - I would say "probably not".

I think Mike K0AZ that is on this board might comment on that, he has to me
anyway. He does have a Collins line in his shack that he has compared to the
K3 as well as his Drake's.
