K3 with Samlex PS ??

callen1155
Hello guys.

After using a battery for 9 months with my K3/100 I need to spend some money and get a power supply. I've decided on the Samlex 1235 which seems to get good reviews. The question I'd like to ask has to do with whether you'd recommend the 'Metered' version or not (has both V and I analog meters)? I've read in a few places where (on some units) the meter's may cause some addition RFI. Not a lot of difference in price so that's not an issue. Any Samlex owners care to comment?

Thanks for any feedback.

I've been using the Samlex 1235 with my K3, with no problems.  So far, I've not detected any RF from it.

However, it does NOT have built-in overvoltage protection, which means if anything goes wrong with its voltage regulator it could fry your radio.  I prefer not to take that chance, so I built an external overvoltage protector for it:

http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/~scotte/hr/OVP.pdf

So far, it has worked fine, aside from one shutdown when I turned on the supply at high line voltage.  I set the OVP to trip at 14.5 V, with the power supply set to 13.8.  It might be better to set the trip point to 15.0.

I've got the Samlex 1235 with the meters. One of the meters was way off
calibration. When the fan kicks on, it's really loud. I quit using the thing
and got a nice Astron 35m which is totally silent. I hate fan noise.

AD5X tested the Samlex 1235, and also describes a very simple mod to run the fan continuously at low speed.  With the mod, the fan probably won't run at the high speed during normal operating.  If your K3 is drawing enough current to turn on the PS fan, the K3 fans will probably be running fast, too.

Re: K3 with Samlex PS ??

Tried that. It was also too loud. The K3's fan is quiet. I also have the
little MFJ switcher. It is also too loud but good enough for occasional use
in the workshop.
