Is anyone on the reflector using their K3 with a
SteppIR antenna and a logging program on their computer? I'm hoping to build a cable to unite my K3 (due in May or June) to the SteppIR box and the computer running Logger32. My Icom IC-756PRO just parallelled the CI-V cable from the radio to the SteppIR box and the serial port on the computer. I'm pretty sure the K3's not going to be that easy. Since the K3 is outputting to a serial port it sounds easy to connect to the computer's serial port but I don't quite see where the SteppIR box interfaces into the picture. Has anyone already plowed this ground? Any help is appreciated. 73, Jim - K5LAD "It's so simple to be wise. Jim;
You'll need a serial "Y" cable. They can be had online and SteppIR sells one too. I have the one from SteppIR. The cable runs from the serial port on my K3 to the serial port on my PC. The other segment of the "Y" runs to the upper-most serial port on the SteppIR controller. I have the SteppIR controller set to "KENW" mode and 4800 baud. I'm using XMLog by W1ECT. XMLog is set to Kenwood TS-2000 mode. Keep in mind that the SteppIR controller is just a passive listener on the serial line. It does not send serial commands. It only responds to commands it "overhears" being sent between the rig and PC. Also in the K3 CONFIG menu, you may want to set "AUTO INF" to "Auto 1". This causes the K3 to send a band/frequency data on the serial line every time you change frequency. Some log book software polls the rig continuously which lets the SteppIR track your band and frequency changes automatically. XM Log does not do this but setting AUTO INF to AUTO 1 accomplishes the same thing and my SteppIR follows as I QSY. Hi Jim,
there was already a discussion regarding this. Below I paste two possible solutions from this reflector. I guess that's what you are looking for... 73! Frank, DD7ZT (awaiting K3 tomorrow ! ;-) ) //copy & paste on If your logging or other rig control program will enable the Kenwood or Elecraft "auto information" mode when it exits (AI1;) the transceiver will send a IF data packet whenever the transceiver frequency changes. This is all the SteppIR controller needs to follow the radio without the logging or control program. You can probably use a terminal program to enable AI if necessary. 73, ... An update to my information quoted below ... Recent firmware updates add Autoinf to the CONFIG menu. Setting Autoinf to AUTO 1 will force autoinfomation ON and allow the SteppIR controller (set for Kenwood) to follow the K3 without the necessity for logging soft- ware to poll the radio. Note: If you use the "Y" cable documented in the SteppIR group files area (on Yahoo) at: <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SteppIR/files/> it may be necessary for the computer to be running in order to avoid pulling the data lines low. 73, ... Hi Jim
I use the K3 with TRX-Manager and my 4el SteppIR. The K3 is on COM 13 (an FTDI USB-serial adapter) and the SteppIR is 'Synchro' on COM 12 4800 baud. The SteppIR happily follows my K3 around. Disclaimer - I am a Beta tester for TRX. 73 John VE3NFK PS - I know Laurent, the author of TRX will be tweaking his software to take advantage of the K3's attributes.
