K3EZ Program fails to retain memories on computer

KM4VX
I see  many people have the same problem with K3EZ; the program loses frequency memory on the computer after shutdown. I know several people have asked Elecraft to develop a program so that the computer would control memories on K-3, but that is a different issue. I am addressing the problem of K3EZ software not retaining the frequency memories or frequency band stacking on the computer after shutdown, after laboriously entered into the K3EZ program. Anyone found a solution? If this is a common problem and remains unresolved after these many months, why are we using it and why is Elecraft listing it? If the problem has been resolved please share the answer. Is there a "save" function to the prgram not obvious to some of us? I am using Windows 7 Pro and is works fine with the K-3 Utility downloads.  Thanks.

Give DXLabs a try.  It too is free and a great program that has been around for
awhile.  Support is great and it works wonderfully with the K3.  Commander (the rig
control screen) has multiple memories that you can save/recall.  You can also set
macros that activate when you change mode.  I use DXL for my everyday logging
except for contests, that's when I use N1MM and then I import those records into
DXL.

I sent him a msg weeks ago and have not received a reply.  Not his problem and I am in no way criticizing him.

Re: K3EZ Program fails to retain memories on computer

Julian, G4ILO
I don't use the program although I tried it a couple of times but the symtoms you are experiencing seem typical of what happens when you install a program under Vista or Win 7 in the Program Files folder and the program tries to store settings in a file in that folder. The new Windows versions don't allow programs to modify anything in Program Files unless installed in XP compatibility mode, one reason I'm sticking with XP, because many amateur-developed programs are not being updated or their developers don't understand the problem because they themselves are using XP. It's a bit mean to get snarky about ham programmers who release a program free of charge for others to use, just because it doesn't come up to professional satndards.

I have always installed my ham radio software in a folder called C:\Ham, which has the fortuitous benefit of falling outside Windows restrictions on keeping configuration files in the same folder. Try that with K3_EZ, it might help.

Re: K3EZ Program fails to retain memories on computer

Julian,
I had this problem with Vista, but solved it by changing the permission
level given to programs (I think they call this the UAC level -- something
like User Account Control).  Unless you reduce the level of security,
programs are not allowed to write to the Program Files folder.  It shouldn't
be necessary to run in XP mode, but who knows?

I have found that by downloading the K3_EZ program several times ( hopefully as administrator ) the memories are now being retained, although the program freezes upon closing. I like K3_EZ better than the other software out there, primarily because of the band stacking on 60 meters and the memory bank under the memories icon. The author has given us without charge a nice program,  and I hope over time he will take another look at the glitches the program experiences with Windows 7 Pro among others. Thanks.
