K3S MIC Problem

Bill Rogers W3UL
I'm guessing that I'm not the first to notice this on the K3S.  I don't do
much SSB but was active in Sweepstakes this past weekend and noted that
occasionally the audio would go dead.  Looking around I found that the MIC
gain had dropped from the usual (about 16) down to zero.  I placed a toroid
around the MIC cable and this seemed to prevent the problem most (but not
all) of the time.  The MIC cable (and the K3S) both sit next to an Alpha
87A amp.  I don't recall reading about this. Is some protective function
being activated?

Re: K3S MIC Problem

Jim Rhodes-2
Since I installed the KIO3B in my K3 I have had issues with RF getting into
the computer and into the radio via the ACC port (a toroid on the cable
helped). I currently have the K3 on the bench, but parts are due tomorrow
so I will be back on in a couple of days. I can't remember the last time I
made a phone Q on it though so I will check that out. Will probably as did
some ferrite on the USB cable too.

Hi friends and neighbours,

was there a contest logging software used? If so, I am thinking about a
"mute of the MIC"
My favourite mode is CW. But when ever I used SSB with N1MM+ I
recognized such behaviour
as described by Bill.

I have not seen this occur, is there any chance that you were
adjusting the VOX or some other way of accidently bumping that control?

Re: K3S MIC Problem

Bill Rogers W3UL
I have been using N1MM+ for years and this is the first time I recall
seeing this problem.  I'll need to check the MIC muting possibility.

I am a PTT footswitch person (no VOX used).

Thanks for these tips.

Re: K3S MIC Problem

The K3(s) as I understand it has protective circuitry that will reduce mic output if there are return power issues.

I once had an experience during Field Day where my K3 was suddenly not transmitting or doing so at a very low level.  Mine was traced to a SO239 connector that had worked loose and was not making good connection.

You can also try recalibrating TX to see if that helps.

In my case the unit went back to the factory for  diagnosis, inspection and repair.  Elecraft's gentle ministrations restored it to full function and I have not had a problem since.

MIC ISSUES...

"" The MIC cable (and the K3S) both sit next to an Alpha ""

I think the proximity of the antenna/s is more relevant than the position of the amp box.

I don't see a tower in the QRZ page view, so maybe there are some "close to the shack" antenna wires ?????
