KAT500 help

Wes Stewart-2
Somehow I misplaced the data cable used to configure the KAT500. As I recall I
had the USB version but since I have more RS232 ports than USB ports available
these days I ordered what I thought would be a replacement.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06Y98F6D5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Unfortunately, it doesn't work; the KAT fails to find the port. I've used two
different computers and the ports that run other devices just fine, so I know
they are operational.  I've traced the pins to the tip and ring of the cable and
they are correct.

Has anyone ever used real RS232 signal levels into one of these, or does it
actually only work with USB?

Re: KAT500 help

Wes,

Download the XG3 manual and look near the end (just before the
schematic) and you will see the wiring for a substitute for the KXSER
cable.  Build one and plug it into one of your RS232 ports.

"Has anyone ever used real RS232 signal levels into one of these, or does it actually only work with USB?"

The KAT500 will accept either TTL or real RS-232 voltage levels. The KAT500 serial data transmitter is not RS-232 compliant (swings between zero and +12 V) and may not work with a true RS-232 receiver.  It does drive a MAX 3232 with no problem.

Whether the linked serial cable will work depends on the characteristics of the RS-232 port it is connected to.  If that port needs true RS-232 voltage levels then it isn't going to work.  (RS-232 swings positive and negative and is not zero referenced).

Okay, the pin 4 to pin 8 jumper fixed it.

Thanks Don and others.
