E980190*   DB15 Y-Cable in conjunction with the
*E850463 Optional KAT500 to KPA500 Cable.

BTW I ordered the KAT500 the day it was announced at Dayton and it arrived

Cheers es 73 to all and happy holidays etc..

Depends what you're trying to do... The Y cable is typically used when
you have some other device (other than the KAT500 and KPA500) that
needs access to the K3's ACC port. The KPA500 should be daisy-chained
off the KAT500, so that the keying line can be interrupted. If the
KAT500 and KPA500 are the only devices needing ACC access, you should
not need a Y - just two cables.

Yes, it does appear that the "Y" cable that comes with the
"KPAK3AUX Optional KPA500 to K3 AUX Cable" kit can be used
to connected the KAT500 to the KPA500.  I am doing so and
all seems to work correctly.  And, of course, the KPAK3AUX
cable should be used between the K3 and the KAT500.
You end up with an unused branch of the "Y" cable, but it's
a lot more compact than another three foot KPAK3AUX cable!

And if you end up having the KPA500 powering up when you turn on the K3
it's one of those undocumented features.....:-)

I have checked my settings and I cannot see what has changed, but the
behavior is not unwelcome, just mystifying.

Re: KAT500 to K3 and KPA500 Cabling

Richard Ferch
According to the description of the AUX Connector Interface in the
KPA500 manual, pulsing pin 8 low momentarily will turn the KPA500 on or
off. It's not supposed to be held low (FWIW, there's an exclamation
point in the manual beside the note that explains this). The KPAK3AUX
cable does not have pin 8 connected, but the Y cable does, so perhaps
connecting pin 8 together between the K3 and the KPA500 is responsible.

Pins 1, 6, and 7 are also used for different purposes by the K3 vs. the
KPA500. In particular, the KPA500 manual says that pin 7 "must not be
connected to K3". Pins 1, 6, 7 and 8 are all not connected in the
KPAK3AUX cable, and this is presumably why.

I'm not sure I'd want to risk using the Y cable in place of the KPAK3AUX
cable, or at least not without removing a few pins first.

Re: KAT500 to K3 and KPA500 Cabling

Gary Gregory-2
Perhaps I should explain further. I have not used (read never) had the Y
cable in use as I don't have another device needing to share the AUX output
for the K3 and have always used the supplied Auxbus cables and I still do
so.

The 'feature' seemed to appear after I switched the longer Auxbus cable
with the shorter cable as it made for better cable routing at the time.

When I switched the K3 power on the KPA500 had the rear switch on also and
both the K3 and KPA500 turned on. The KPA500 front panel power switch does
not work to power off the amplifier until the K3 is switched off and then
it works as expected.

I know folks wanted this to happen when the kpa500 was released and now I
have it working I am reluctant to see it stopped.

I see no reason why this works as it does as the only difference I have
made appears to be switching the Auxbus cables.

Puzzling, but not at all unwelcome behavior...:-)
