Hi,
I just got a message from lulu that the 20% savings code is SUNSHINE305 ('til June 30) if anybody is still interested in the K3 book. 73, Fred www.ke7x.com "The Elecraft K3: Design, Configuration, and Operation" ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
Howdy Fred!
GL on the book. I understand from Gene KB7Q that you have a photo of moonbounce operation with it ;-) I hope that motivates a few K3 owners to include 6m EME in their DXpedition travels! I just downloaded the KE7X K3 Book with the discount price of
$12. Now THAT is a bargain! I have only taken a quick peek but can see the finished product is greatly enhanced from the rough draft that Fred sent me to help him with editing/additions. I regret that I was not able to get thru a review in time to help him with this, but see he had several others that did. Frankly, in the few chapters I did get thru, I found nothing substantial to correct or add. I may eventually print it out to put along side the "original draft copy" that I have in a three-ring binder, but having it on the computer may be more useful for quick search and reference. I also have the "Nifty Mini-Manual" which is a nice small condensation of the K3 manual (handy to take mobile/portable - like at Field Day), but Fred's book is the encyclopedia of K3 in comparison. I heartily recommend this book to all K3 owners. You can expect to be surprised at what you will learn in reading the "book"...even if you are a seasoned user of the K3! If you are a new user or just considering buying a K3, this book will definitely help with the decisions that one goes thru in "building" their K3 order. 73, Ed - KL7UW, WD2XSH/45 ====================================== BP40IQ 500 KHz - 10-GHz www.kl7uw.com EME: 50-1.1kw?, 144-1.4kw, 432-100w, 1296-60w, 3400-? Question for those who have the printed book and/or pdf: I was in the
process of ordering the printed version and first looked at the samples on the website. It appears that this document is in black and white rather than color. Is that the actual case with the final product? The many graphs, charts and P3 displays would certainly be enhanced with color. If it is actually all monochrome I may just get the pdf version, as have a good black and white laser printer here. On the other hand, the price of the printed version would be a reasonable value if it were in color. 73 Craig AC0DS <> I just downloaded the KE7X K3 Book with the discount price of <> $12. My printed version is in black and white but the cover is color. It is worth buying both I think.

Thanks, everyone, for the useful info in the book options. I decided to go with the PDF version. Based on my quick browse through it, it looks like lots of helpful information nicely arranged. I'll move the PDF to my IPad for convenient searching and probably print out only selected sections for a hardcopy reference.

Craig,
The printed version is nice in that with double sided printing and a good spiral binding it is easy to work with. It easily folds over on itself. I would think the 280 one sided pages would be more clumsy to work with in a binder. Regardless the book is well done and I am most pleased with my own copy. 73 Doug EI2CN -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Craig D. Hi All,
After reviewing the sample info on KE7X's website, I decided to order the book as a PDF. The download process is a little convoluted (through Lulu), but it came through alright. Yes, it's only black and white--no color. Color would be nice, but I planned on printing it out on a B & W laser printer anyway--which I have now done. It came out just fine--all 280 pages! I have a nice little Brother laser printer, which prints out copies for just over a penny a copy--and it has a duplexing feature, so I guess I saved a few bucks doing it this way. Still have to put it in some sort of binder, but that's no big deal. Anyway, it's a huge volume with excellent explanations throughout, based on what I've seen/read so far. It also gives me great insight as to what folks in Montana do during those long winters when it's 30 below zero and snow all over the ground! Hi. Kudos to KE7X for an excellent piece of work. Yes, 288 + single sided pages would be terrible! Fortunately, I was able to print mine out double sided and it fits into a hardcover binder with no problem.

I'm setting up a transverter band for 432MHz.
I have a switched dummy load feeding the transverter at around the ten watt level. However, on a two tone test the output on 28MHz is considerably cleaner at 13 watts (KPA100 in) than it is at 10 watts. But - the transverter band set up will not let me go above 12 watts. Is there a work around other than using 28MHz straight and accepting the MHz frequency readout is wrong? Roger,
A resistive power attenuator adding a db or so loss between the KPA100 and transverter would allow you to run a little more power from the KPA100, and you would most likely not have to bypass it during receive. An extra db or so addded to the transverter's receive IF output (28 MHz) should not affect the 432 MHz Rx noise figure by a noticeable amount - assuming some Rx gain in the transverter. The thick film "non-inductive power resistors" available from Farnel are satisfactory for use in a power attenuator at 28 MHz. 73, Geoff GM4ESD On June 28, 2011 at 13:29 Z, Roger Dixon wrote: > I'm setting up a transverter band for 432MHz. > > I have a switched dummy load feeding the transverter at around the ten > watt > level. > > However, on a two tone test the output on 28MHz is considerably cleaner at > 13 watts (KPA100 in) than it is at 10 watts. > > But - the transverter band set up will not let me go above 12 watts. Hi Geoff
I should have said that it is a K3 I have. Is it possible to change the cut-in point of the KPA100 ?? Mine seems fixed at 13 watts. The problem is (ref page 39 - Using Transverters) is that you cannot set XVn PWR to more than 12 watts. Thus you cannot get the clean signal from the KPA100.
