I was just putting the finishing touches on installing the KIO2 in my
K2 when I encountered a problem during testing. I was at the part of testing the change in current when pulling the KIO2 off and on. When I pulled the KIO2 off and powered the radio back on, I got a 'Low Batt' message and the voltage was reading 0.00.. this is with the battery only in it. I tried plugging the KIO2 back in and it still reads 0.00. It looks like everything else functions normally. I noticed the radio on receive was drawing .30 on the scale (it still can read current draw). I have the Auto Tuner, the Noise Blanker, the Audio Filter, the 160 meter band option and the ssb adapter (in addition to the KIO2). Is that an acceptable amount of current draw when running it with the display on nite mode (backlit)? Any ideas where I should start looking to repair the built-in volt meter? _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Hi,
You should look around U3 on the control board, U3 maybe defective, Also look at the voltage chart in the manual and check for R9 and R10 on the control board. Also check that you do not change the position of jumper P7 to "EXT" position instead of "INT". James:
Look at the control board and switch the voltmeter switch S1 back to the INT position. Or if you have a newer unit you may have accidentally knocked off the jumper on the voltmeter connector P7 - The jumper has to be set to the INT positon. Fear not this is a common occurrence...LOL The S! or P7 are located in the upper left hand corner of the control board when viewed form the component side. 73 Jim Younce K4ZM James Said: I was just putting the finishing touches on installing the KIO2 in my K2 when I encountered a problem during testing. Everyone's hunches were correct! It was the little slider switch on
the control board. I must have bumped it when I was unplugging the cables. I switched it back to '12V' and everything worked fine. I even found it in the manual later on (Go figure.. looked at the directions hihi). Thanks everyonen for your help. Ah yes, I forgot to mention my K2 vintage, it's S/N 2735. So far I don't have communications between the radio and the computer, but I have to check the serial cable and I'll have to double-check the KIO2. Otherwise everything else looks good. ----- Original Message ----- From: Tom Hammond <[hidden email]> Date: Sunday, August 14, 2005 10:23 am Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KIO2 install and volt meter problem > James: > > Check the mini-slide switch on the CONTROL BOARD. Hi all,
Well I guess just about everyone has bumped into the slider switch and gotten the "battery low" message. I'm just curious as what the purpose of that slider is? In other words, when is it appropriate to to switch it over? Inquiring minds want to know! Theoretically you wouldn't even need a DVM to build and adjust a K2! However, so many people bumped the switch that later K2s have a jumper instead! -- 73, Vic, K2VCO Fresno CA http://www.qsl.net/k2vco _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
