KPA-1500 s/n 56

Ed Gilliland
I received my KPA-1500 s/n 56 last Friday and have it on the air.  All
is well with the exception of not being able to use the KPA-1500
Utility.  I do not get a notification sound from the computer when I
plug the USB cable into the computer.  I've reset the KPA-1500, tried
different USB ports, no success.  Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks, Ed W5TM

Re: KPA-1500 s/n 56

Dick Dievendorff-4
I’d suggest using the Windows Device Manager to view COM ports, see what COMn gets added when you unplug and plug in the USB cable from the amp.  If none change, it might be a device driver needed. Usually Windows finds this driver automatically if needed, but sometimes you need to reinstall the driver. There is a link to the FTDI driver website on the page for KPA1500 Utility. There may be advice in the KPA1500 utility help text under troubleshooting.

The USB port is used for factory burn in software, so it was working at least at that time.

If you can’t get it quickly, contact Elecraft support, they probably have a better checklist than I do.

power varying - KPA1500

Carl Yaffey
When running the KPA1500 at full power, sometimes the power will fluctuate. EXAMPLE: I was checking in to the Elecraft SSB net a little while ago. While transmitting, the power dropped to around 400W. This has happened on 20M CW as well. I wonder if the K3S output is dropping. (??).
If I run at 500W or so, no problem.

Thanks Dick,

That's the first thing I did Dick but nothing on the Windows Device
Manager changes and there is no notification sound that you usually get
when unplugging/plugging a device into a USB port. I wonder if the USB
port in the KPA-1500 is dead.

I reinstalled the FTDI driver, no help.

I uninstalled/reinstalled the KPA-1500 Utility, no help.

The KPA-1500 Manual under Troubleshooting suggests the Windows Device
Manager, unplugging/plugging the USB cable method to locate the proper
com port.

I've run out of talent...hi!  I'll send a note to Elecraft Support.

Thanks for the note, Ed

Re: KPA-1500 s/n 56

Ed Gilliland
I replaced the USB cable with a known good cable, no help.

I am using the K3s.  I neglected to order the AUX cable when I ordered
the amp but since have placed one on order and should be here tomorrow
but I don't think it will help in this case.

Maybe Elecraft Support will have an answer.  I REALLY don't want to send
the amp back to Elecraft.

Note the one item I have as failed.  If you find the same on your machine, simply quick uninstall, then go to the top tool bar and click on action and scan for hardware changes.  The snippet tool won't let me copy to point it out to you.  See if that doesn't do it.  So, to summarize, Device manager, click on the Universal Serial Bus Controllers, right click on marked USB devices marked with a fault indicator and then uninstall each of them, then go up to menu and then scan for changes.  That should do it.  Of course, you have to select the correct port when using the utility, and try each one to be sure you have the correct port!

Ed,

Can you connect the K3 Utility to your K3S using the USB cable supplied
with the K3S?

If not then it sounds like you have a FTDI driver issue.
http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm
http://www.ftdichip.com/Support/Documents/InstallGuides.htm

If the K3S connects to the K3 Utility then please send an e-mail to <

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the reply.

I'm using Windows 10 Pro, Windows Defender.

I thought that you had nailed it.  I checked the Allowed Apps in Windows
Defender and the KPA-1500 Utility wasn't listed.  I added it and
restarted the computer, no help.  Shouldn't I hear a notification sound
when I plug/unplug the KPA-1500 USB cable.  I do when I unplug/plug the
keyboard.

Thanks again, Ed

Re: KPA-1500 s/n 56

Bill K9YEQ
You might try removing the USB connector, Restart, check the device manager, if a device isn't linked, remove it , then plug in the USB.  If that doesn't connect, remove it again, and then sort through the comports in the utility and if that doesn't work, you may have different problem.  I suspect your issue is within your PC not the amp.  Let me know.

Bill

No failures seen under the USB Controllers Bill.

Carl,

I haven't seen any responses to your question -- have you determined
anything further by now? Assume you're not using ALC hook up?

"When running the KPA1500 at full power, sometimes the power will fluctuate.
EXAMPLE: I was checking in to the Elecraft SSB net a little while ago. While
transmitting, the power dropped to around 400W. This has happened on 20M CW
as well. I wonder if the K3S output is dropping. (??).
If I run at 500W or so, no problem."

Carl

I have not experienced any of this type problem.  I have my CONFIG:PWR
SET to PER BAND  so that the K3s switches power levels depending on if
the KPA1500 is OP/STNBY.

Since you are saying this depends on your output power then would first
look for RF feedback issues.  Are you using the Aux cable between
K3s/KPA1500?

Ed,

Did you ever install any Prolific USB devices in your system?  Prolific
Device Drivers are buggy and can often interfere with the FTDI drivers.
Prolific Device Drivers can be uninstalled.

You can use the free USBDeview facility to look for this:

https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click to download the 64-bit
version, (direct link https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usbdeview-x64.zip).
Unzip to empty directory, then run usbdeview.exe.  Scroll way over to the
right and click on the column header "Device Mfg" to sort by that column.
Look for "Prolific" in the list.  Right click and uninstall.  Then reboot
and reconnect the USB cable to the KPA1500.

If it's still not recognized, you may have a bad USB port on your amp.

Bob, N6TV

Re: KPA-1500 s/n 56

Bob Wilson, N6TV
Another possibility, especially if you are reaching behind the KPA1500 to
insert the USB cable, and can't see the connectors well, is that you've
accidentally pushed the square USB-B plug it into the square RJ-45
(Ethernet) connector instead of into the USB-B connector which is just
above it.

Re: KPA-1500 s/n 56

Ed Gilliland
Thanks Bob,

I looked at the USB-B connector again, unplugged from the WinKeyer and
plugged into the KPA1500, no virtual port was created.

Elecraft agrees with you about the USB chip being bad.  They've sent me
an RSA so the amp will go back for service.  I asked if we could do a
board swap but they have other mods to make to the RF deck and that they
will give the amp top priority repair status.

I used USBDeview, no PROLIFIC drivers and the three COM ports listed are
all using FTDI drivers.  Nice utility, thanks.
