G’day all,
Like many others I am waiting, with eager anticipation, for my KPA-500 kit to arrive. I have a question regarding driving a KPA-500 with a IC 756 Pro 3. I know that it can be done using the PA key out/in cabling, no problems there, however I would also like to use the KPA-500 15 auxiliary port connected to my 756 using either the 8 or 13 pin DIN port wired as per the cable connections shown on pg. 17 of the KPA-500 manual. My question is twofold: 1. In the KPA-500 manual it states that a common VGA cable should not be used, apart from the obvious pinout configuration is there any other reason why not? 2. I spoke with Dale at Elecraft and he informed me that Elecraft only supplies an auxiliary cable to suit the K3 (P/No KPAK3AUX), no surprise Hi Hi! I wonder if there is a supplier of a suitable interface cable yet in the states? -- 73 Dale - VK4DMC ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Pin-out is a very good reason -- many (most?) VGA cables do not have all pins connected. 73, Jim K9YC ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Further; many of them have the pins that are not used for VGA shorted to the shield at both ends, so even if they pass a continuity test from end-to-end, they won't work very well ;) ~iain / N6ML ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

And many of the pins are shorted together in the connector.

A good cable is the 6-foot SVGA M/F cable from www.cablewholesale.com, part
number 10H1-01206. All 15 pins are connected through, no pins are shorted together, and there is a foil shield with drain wire - and the cable is only $3.25. Here is the spec sheet on that cable: www.cablewholesale.com/pdfspecs/10h1-012.pdf. So for non-K3 users, just cut off the male end and connect your radio-specific connector. For K3 users, you can just remove the unnecessary male pins (use needle nose pliers to twist and pull out). Or you can use a 31H1-05200 HD15 M/F adapter ($1.76) and break out the pins on this M/F adapter should you wish to preserve the cable as-is. Cable Wholesale also sells a SVGA splitter (2xfemale-to-male) with all pins connected through. Part number is 10H1-27708 and these are $3.46 each. I have no connection to these folks, other than I've been using their cables and adapters. Please note that several pins must be broken off or removed so that not all signal lines are passed from K3 to the amp.
