Well, after carefully reading the manual and noting that relay K3 should not be installed
until after T2, I lost concentration and installed it by mistake. Is this a show stopper, requiring removal of the relay, or more to do with having enough room to solder T2 to the long pads etc? Hi Trevor:
I'm reasonably sure that the latter reason is the driving force. From experience in removing T2, the hot iron CAN accidentally bump into K3. Trevor,
The reason K3 is no mounted until later is to allow more room for pulling the wires through T2 and soldering the core and wires - but since you have it already mounted, I would say that you should leave it in and work around it carefully rather than risk damage by removing it. OTOH, if you have a good desoldering tool like the Hakko 808, removing it would be easier and a prudent thing to do. 73, Don W3FPR > -----Original Message----- > > Well, after carefully reading the manual and noting that relay K3 > should not be installed > until after T2, I lost concentration and installed it by mistake. > Is this a show stopper, > requiring removal of the relay, or more to do with having enough > room to solder T2 to > the long pads etc? > > Trevor G0KTN > > _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. First of all, thanks to all those that offered advice - much appreciated.
Well, after much deliberation (reading this mail archive & Eham reviews etc) I decided to put away the solder wick and purchase a Hakko 808. I tried it out on some discarded pcb's ( where I had previously used solder wick) and all I can say is that its probably the best tool purchase I've made. Full of confidence I tackled the K3 relay and a few seconds later it came away from the board as clean as you like - wonderful!! Its expensive to buy in the UK, and if you're a careful builder it might not see a lot of immediate use, but for those occasions when mistakes do occur or you need to rework the K2 to install mods etc it looks like being invaluable. 73 to all Trevor G0KTN _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
