My KPA500 used to very reliably automatically set the radio to the 'drive
power' setting when I switched the amp on. Now, I installed the latest amplifier firmware and it doesn't do that anymore ... I have to manually toggle the OPER / STBY function. Was I supposed to change a variable that I missed? This sounds like the new firmware fixed a bug. I don't think the amp is
supposed to put the rig in "drive power" mode when it is in standby mode, only when it is in operate mode. I certainly wouldn't want the amp to limit the K3's output to 35 watts in standby mode. 73, Scott, N9AA On 12/20/12 4:43 PM, Steve Jackson wrote: > My KPA500 used to very reliably automatically set the radio to the 'drive > power' setting when I switched the amp on. > > Now, I installed the latest amplifier firmware and it doesn't do that > anymore ... Steve,
Do you have both the K3 and the KPA firmware up to the latest level. I recall seeing something about that relationship before, and I am thinking it has been fixed. 73, Don W3FPR On 12/20/2012 4:43 PM, Steve Jackson wrote: > My KPA500 used to very reliably automatically set the radio to the 'drive > power' setting when I switched the amp on. > > Now, I installed the latest amplifier firmware and it doesn't do that > anymore ... Don
I believe that I do, and, apparently it wasn't. The new amp code is set to work 'better' with the KAT500, which I do not have, since I would need a remote version and that's either not yet available or it won't ever be available, I can't tell which. I will simply go back to the old version of KPA500 code since it was fine for my use. I'm having the same issue.
Recently I installed a KAT500 & upgraded both the KAT500 & KPA500 firmware. I'm sure the K3 was sensing when to use full power (KPA500 = OFF or STBY) or reduced power (KPA500 = On & OPER) before; it did not seem to matter whether the K3 or KPA500 was turned on first. Now I have to make sure both are on and then switch the KPA500 to STBY then back to OPER otherwise the K3 sends full power (100 watts) to the KPA500 & it faults. I'm seeing exactly the same behavior. You have to cycle to standby and back to operate if turning on the amp and it's set to start up in operate.
Also, if I set the pwr in the K3 to "nor", the drive and bypass power feature doesn't seem to work at all. To have the feature work, I have to have the pwr set to "by band". OK Folks, I will confirm the bug. We are working on it now and will have a solution ASAP.
My tests show that communications is normal after this point, meaning that the KPA properly communicates the OPER mode to the K3. The work-around is to set the POWER-ON mode to STBY. Our apologies for this glitch. We will have it resolved shortly. Thanks Jack
Quick test confirmed that the display on the K3 indicated the KPA500 was "ON" but the power remained at 100 watts. Don't remember if K3 displayed "OPERATE" when it turned on before the installation of my KAT500 & FW upgrades.
