I need some help on the KRC2 I just built for use with my K3. I have the
auxbus connection set up and the KRC2 responds fine to the band settings of the K3--turns on the relay drivers for each band and also the ACC drivers follow the K3's KRC2 config menu settings. The KRC2 also passes the push button tests in the manual. However, I want to change the band map of the KRC2 using the Elecraft KRC2 Configuration Programmer Software. I find the instructions for the s/w--on the Elecraft web site--as well as the KRC2 manual pretty cryptic. With the PC connected to the KRC2 PC port, and the slide switch in the DL position, the s/w KRC2 Config window pops up with "KRC2 Firmware = 1.5;". Simultaneously, but underneath that window I get the "Error connecting to a KRC2...No KRC2 found. ..." window. After closing both those windows, a try of the "Send To KRC2" button reports "Last Send Failed!". Does anyone have experience with this? Besides the slide switch, are there any jumpers in the KRC2 that need to be set? I have jumpers 9-23 all installed, and jumpers 1-8 all open. I'm guessing the "KRC2 Firmware = 1.5" report implies the PC is communicating with the KRC2. So why the "No KRC found." report? I've tried this with both a USB-serial converter and a hardware serial port with the same results. Any help appreciated. 73 - Don, W7VXS ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
Don,
I've had the same issues with a KRC2 I built some time ago. I've also tried the same things -- two different USB-to-serial adapters, and a hardware serial port, all to no avail. Interestingly enough, I can re-flash the KRC2 with it's firmware, but not use the configuration utility to change the band map. In my case, I wanted to set it up to 3-of-8 (instead of the default 1-of-8) encoding, to drive an Ameritron remote antenna switch. Elecraft's support tried to help me, including offering to look at high-res pictures of both sides of the PCB, but nothing ever helped. My plan now is to order the Ameritron control box, that will take 1-of-8 and convert it to 3-of-8 encoding. That way I can use the KRC2 to convert from the K3 Aux bus, and the Ameritron box will take it from there. I've searched this list from time to time, looking for others with KRC2 questions, but not seen any (could have missed them, of course). As an electrical engineer and computer maven from way back (too far back to admit, I suppose), it bugs me that I've never been able to root cause the issue, but I've also not really had (or taken) the time to deep-dive it, either. Hope that helps (or at least opens the conversation again, and maybe someone else will have something concrete to contribute), -- Dave, N8SBE On 9/4/2011 2:18 PM, Don Sandstrom wrote: > I need some help on the KRC2 I just built for use with my K3. The band map configuration component of KRC2 Utility seems to have, err, “issues.” It works for me with appropriate pixie dust, but I’m using a Mac version of the utility.
Part of the pixie dust involves saving an edited configuration to a file *before* loading that configuration into the KRC2. Also, note that the KRC2 won’t know what band the K3 is on if you turn on the KRC2 after turning on the K3. That is, the KRC2 is only informed about band changes (via auxbus) when the K3 is powered on or changes bands; it doesn’t poll the K3. IMHO, your best bet is to lobby Elecraft to apply some resources to the utility software and documentation. Don,
While I agree that the KRC2 Configuration Utility should be upgraded, remember that this is a beta version that has only been tested on Windows XP. If you are trying to run it on Vista or Win7, I think I know why it fails for you - it keeps the .dll files in its own directory, and my understanding of Vista and Win7 is that is "highly discouraged" by the OS. Try running in XP compatibility mode to see if that helps. 73, Don W3FPR On 9/4/2011 2:18 PM, Don Sandstrom wrote: > I need some help on the KRC2 I just built for use with my K3. Don,
While that will work on Vista, it won't necessarily work out of the box on Win7, as XP compatibility mode doesn't exist in Windows 7 Home Premium; you have to have Win7 Professional and download the compatibility files from Microsoft's website. Matt,
I only suggested XP compatibility (or running on a real XP machine) to verify one possible reason for the behavior. I did not consider whether obtaining that compatibility would be easy or difficult, only that it *may* be necessary with the existing version of the software. I have seen other software (the backup program I use for instance), that will not run on Vista nor Win7, so this is not an isolated problem. Microsoft has backed away from "backward compatibility" - if you want all your ham software to run, stick with WinXP (or perhaps even Win2K) even though it has been declared "outdated", as a plus, it performs well on older computers with less horsepower and memory than is required with Vista or Win7. Creating a dual boot computer for the shack applications is not out of the question IMHO. 73, Don W3FPR On 9/4/2011 5:56 PM, Matthew Pitts wrote: > Don, > > While that will work on Vista, it won't necessarily work out of the box on Win7, as XP compatibility mode doesn't exist in Windows 7 Home Premium; you have to have Win7 Professional and download the compatibility files from Microsoft's website. > > Matthew Pitts > N8OHU > Sent from my Wireless Device > > -----Original Message----- > From: Don Wilhelm<[hidden email]> > Sender: [hidden email] > Date: Sun, 04 Sep 2011 17:50:50 > To:<[hidden email]> > Reply-To: [hidden email] > Cc:<[hidden email]> > Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 Need help with configuration utility > > Don, > > While I agree that the KRC2 Configuration Utility should be upgraded, > remember that this is a beta version that has only been tested on > Windows XP. When I saw the posts re" KRC2 configuration I was really hoping that some
new software would be coming from Elecraft. I once managed to get mine to work with Real XP machine and real serial cable. I would like to reprogram the KRC2 but alas it won't work. Same computer same cables. What is the firmware version of your KRC2? I have this problem with 1.5
when I upgraded the KRC2 to 1.6 the software worked fine.
