It started in FYBO 2004. I worked Paul W0RW in a snow pile in CO from my snow
pile in MO and later found out he was /PM. What started? My thinking that someday I needed to stick a whip in my back pocket and try not to electrocute myself. Then I was running my K2, but now my KX1 is begging to go /PM. Last night I finally got around to it. Hustler whip in back pocket. KX1 on AA batts running full out at 2 watts. Sixteen foot drag wire and looking for signals on 20. Dog Josey standing by just in case I saw a bear. You know I've heard they like /PM hams. ATU tunes the hustler 1 to 1. Only one strong signal and he was chewing the rag on 14059. Was afraid that the band would die. Move up 1 kc and play memory one three times. Low and behold Chris comes back on 14.060 from PA. An 800 mile /PM QSO MO to PA on 2 watts /PM! And of course Chris was running his KX1, what else? Can't explain the mojo. Did someone say we were at the bottom of the cycle? That sounds liks fun John.
My next project is to try /PM with the KX1. Not quite as exciting but I worked VK9LNO last night with the KX1 and a longwire on 30 mtrs. running about 3 watts. I'm still amazed by the little rig! 73 Tony W7GO ----- Original Message ----- From: "n0evh" <[hidden email]> To: <[hidden email]> Sent: Thursday, May 11, 2006 2:08 PM Subject: [Elecraft] KX1 Mojo /PM > It started in FYBO 2004. That seriously does sound like fun. > signals on 20. Dog Josey standing by just in case I saw a bear. > John N0EVH (Every volt helps) Since you bring up bears. I'd like to pass on a letter for all you QRPers who like to go out in the wilderness. The U.S. Department of Agriculture in cooperation with Canadian authorities have issued an official bear warning. This is due to the recent increase in bear attacks. Since most of these attacks are directly attributed to surprising the bears. You are advised, when in bear territory, to wear a little bell and to carry pepper spray. You are also advised, since Black bears are far more doscile than Brown bears, to try to determine what kind of bear is in your area. This is easily done by examining their waste. Black bear waste contains little bits of berries, insects, and such. Brown bear waste contains little bells and smells like pepper. Ron Pyle Hot Springs, SD When being chased by a bear. You don't have to outrun the bear. You just have to outrun the other guy. Beware of kisses from Pit Bulls...They might have the flu... _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Hi Gang, When going into "Bear Country", besides the pepper spray, take two sticks. Bang them together at frequent intervals and shout "hi bear". Let them know that you are coming. You are much better off. 73, Steve Brandt N7VS Portland, Oregon > > Last night I finally got around to it. Hustler whip in back pocket. You better have something to feed them. Conga lines make bears very hungry.

The best way to avoid bears is to help them avoid us. In bear country, one of the most dangerous things one can do is take a really quiet hike along a trail, especially when walking into the wind, or sit for long periods under a tree wearing the earbuds while hamming on a KX1. Almost every bear out there hates the idea of interacting with humans, much less taking a bite out of one, but they aren't going to stand for being surprised in "their" territory. They're downright human-like in their reaction to being surprised, only they're so much bigger and stronger that we are it's no contest (and if the bear you find isn't bigger than you, be sure that momma is and she's coming on the double!). It really makes for much safer portable operation if you make a little racket now and again so the wildlife will know that you're around. Maybe we need wildlife tips in the KX1 operator's instructions <G>.
