The play in the VFO shaft is an indicator that the KX1 you have has been
well used for some time.
The easiest solution is just to replace the encoder.
I have repaired many KX1s, but only a few well used ones have had
encoder problems, so I don't believe there is a "bad batch of encoders"
in the KX1 history. Yes, yours was an early KX1.
Look up the part number and description in the KX1 parts list and email
it to
