KX3 CW keying problem

Adrian-3
Petr, I have exactly the same issue here, seems to be with keyer, and I have
a new paddle from Elecraft

Especially with the right dah key I have inadvertent dits generated before
and sometimes after a correct T send.

I often get a R or N, and it is very annoying. I have tried FW reload and
stronger springs to no avail.

It seems the KX3 keyer has a mind of its own and cannot generate clean cw.

Let me know if you find a solution please ?

I've been using KX3 for some time now and still have some problems

with CW keying. I'm using squeeze keying Curtis A. In the KX3 menu,

there is selected A squeeze mode but during the QSO, it seems that the

B is still enabled. The internal keyer very often adds dash, sometimes

dot. It's horrible, because of that, I have to use an external keyer

(TinyKeyer by Martin, OK1RR).

It seems the problem is not with the paddle, I tried to use two

paddles - Mercury N2DAN paddle from Bencher and Electraft Hexkey

paddle. Still the same result. It's really annoying because when I

operate from portable, I have to take care also about external keyer.

What could be the problem? KX3 SN is 7742 with latest firmware

installed.

I love CW (HSC, CWOPS, FOC) and this keying issue is the only thing I

don't like on my KX3.

Thanks for your help

Re: KX3 CW keying problem

Adrian-3
Kent yes i did try that. I prefer Iambic A as Petr does, his experience
is identical to mine.

I had tried iambic B previous to your advice with no change, and i don't
use squeeze keying in any case. this is testing at 15 wpm.

The issue is random, and sometimes I can nearly get through a CQ without
it messing up.

On my Yaesu rigs, same procedure, I have no issue and the send is
perfect heard & tested with cwget monitor.

On the KX3  I can tap for a  dah and sometimes get a dit-dat-dit or
dah-dit. When sending the 4 in my call I often get a dit after the last dah.

or a dah-dit on the T.

How the right paddle can produce a dit is beyond me. Left is set dit.

I have played with weight and delay settings also to no avail. Thankyou
for your response.

Also I found an interesting blog by Tony VK3CAT ;

https://vk3cat.wordpress.com/elecraft-kx3-experiences-from-the-field/

I will look at the 4 pin socket tomorrow, and probably rework the soldering.

Kent, yes and the KXPD3 is brand new just received from Elecraft,

which has the new wired paddle design.

I think that is ok, but I suspect a connection issue via J9 > pcb, or a
keyer fault.

Re: KX3 CW keying problem

Adrian-3
Well, I opened the KX3, removed the top/bottom flex connector and the
battery connector to give best

access to J9 with the bottom removed and put aside.

I cleaned up a fine iron, and re-soldered the four J9 connections to
PCB, leaving the paddle fixed in place.

I put it all back together, and now the paddle send is perfect, better
than expected.

So as others have found, the J9 solder connections to the PCB were flawed..

Happy Camper here now.
