KX3 Charger KXBC3 and alternative power source.

I too suffer from the idiosyncrasies of this charger and find 13.8v is not quite enough for it to bring the NiMh calls to full charge so I readjusted my desktop PS to 14.2V and that works fine.

I also receive a lot of charge failures with an error of "Temp not 0-40C" when the charge is happening in an ambient temp less than 25 degC and the radio has not been transmitting to heat it up.  In fact this happens on most charges and I am careful to not overcharge the batteries.

For external portable power I purchased a couple of 5AH 4 cell LiPo pack from HobbyKing, (who have offices in a number of countries), and a fast charger that also balances the cells when needed.   Fully charged LiPo packs come in at a little over 16V so I include a diode dropper in the lead to reduce the worst case voltage to under 16V. These cells are light and charge quickly but better still they will charge the internal NiMh batteries. There is a good selection of matching plugs and Si wire there too.

This is an amusing device:

Does a good job delivering 13.8 with < 30 mils overhead

Cheap too!
