The KX3 will ship with the KXUSB interface cable (USB) unless the buyer
specifies the KXSER (RS232) cable instead. It has been stated that a module will be developed that will allow the KX3 to work to the P3. In a fully integrated K3/P3 set, the P3 daisy-chains on the RS232 interface to the host computer (for firmware updates, utility program use etc). This raises the following questions: Is the proposed KX3/P3 interface module going to include a data connection between the P3 and the KX3? If so, how will this be accomplished? e.g. Will there be a logic level cable to the KX3, and an RS232 connection to the P3? If a KX3 purchaser gets the standard KXUSB cable, perhaps that could plug into the second USB connector for communications? I would not expect so, as the second connector is a USB type-b, an adapter would be needed. I realize a lot is in flux right now. I am trying to determine if there is a any real reason to get the RS232 type cable over the USB flavor for the KX3 if one is already using USB converters successfully with the K3/PS etc. Another question from a home-brewer/tinkerer perspective- I already have an FTDI based USB-TTL converter that terminates in a 3.5mm plug. Is the KXSER cable a simple RS232/TTL level converter? Perhaps it's too early to have full answers for these issues, but I thought tossing them out there for the designers to mull over might help the process. 73, Bruce, N1RX ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
And one more question:
After KXUSB terminates in a 3.5mm plug, there is no place for DTR line. Then how is arranged the CW keying by a computer? 73, Val LZ1VB > The KX3 will ship with the KXUSB interface cable (USB) unless the buyer > specifies the KXSER (RS232) cable instead. > > It has been stated that a module will be developed that will allow the KX3 > to work to the P3. > > In a fully integrated K3/P3 set, the P3 daisy-chains on the RS232 > interface > to the host computer (for firmware updates, utility program use etc). > > This raises the following questions: > > Is the proposed KX3/P3 interface module going to include a data connection > between the P3 and the KX3? I think I read somewhere that the KX3 is/will be Bluetooth capable -
will there be recognition/provision of/for a wireless mini keyboard or will there be some other way to plug a keyboard directly into the KX3? I would think that whatever external keying device you are using would have
to connect via the KEY jack. This would be a contact closure (or the equivalent) to ground, with the KEY jack in straight key mode, via the KX3 menu.73, Bruce, N1RX > After KXUSB terminates in a 3.5mm plug, there is no place for DTR line. > Then how is arranged the CW keying by a computer? > 73, Val LZ1VB ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Dan-
There are no plans (that I know of) for a Bluetooth interface for the KX3. Some prospective users have asked about such, but Elecraft has no plans to offer one. You could add a 3rd party Bluetooth interface for mic/speaker if you wish. That would be up to you, however. As for keyboard, there is no provision for a keyboard connection directly to the KX3 (at this time/that I am aware of...) Perhaps a future option, but that would be for Wayne to confirm/deny... 73, Bruce, N1RX > I think I read somewhere that the KX3 is/will be Bluetooth capable - > will there be recognition/provision of/for a wireless mini keyboard or > will there be some other way to plug a keyboard directly into the KX3? >Dan - KI4YZE ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Well, this means that KXUSB is unusable for CW operation. We will need
"full" USB adapter, carrying DTR line like KUSB, DB9 socket, than a transistor key and two 3.5mm plugs - one for the KEY jack and one for the COM port. How spoiled are we by K3, hi. 73, Val LZ1VB >I would think that whatever external keying device you are using would have > to connect via the KEY jack. All the programming/CW/PTT cable discussions prompted me to pass along this tip
someone else gave me: On the recommendation of someone I met in Dayton this year, I've made several radio programming/CAT/CW/PTT cables using these devices: http://www.ftdichip.com/Products/Cables/USBRS232.htm They terminate to bare wires so you can put whatever connector you need on the end. It's also easy to slip a copper braid over the wire for shielding if that is required. I've had no issues using them on Windows or Linux. Mouser sells them: http://www.mouser.com/Search/m_ProductDetail.aspx?FTDI/USB-RS232-WE-1800-BT_50/&qs=D1/PMqvA100CRKe9cg4TXA== This model is RS-232, but they have them with TTL an RS-422 as well if you have a requirement for those interfaces. I'm using them for radio CAT/PTT/CW keying with my K2 and IC-706. The '706 CAT cable is connected homebrewed CIV circuit covered with black heat shrink tubing. The PTT/CW keying cables are connected to homebrew single transistor keying circuits specific for the radio it's intended for, also covered with heat shrink tubing. It makes a nice, compact set of cables. I use a separate cable for programming/CAT and keying/PTT. Off topic a bit, but I also use these cables for radio programming and low speed data with my D-STAR radios. hi dan,
Not at this time. We do not have Bluetooth inside the KX3. 73, Eric Eric --- www.elecraft.com On 1/5/2012 11:39 AM, Dan Boardman wrote: > I think I read somewhere that the KX3 is/will be Bluetooth capable - > will there be recognition/provision of/for a wireless mini keyboard or > will there be some other way to plug a keyboard directly into the KX3? > > > Dan - KI4YZE > ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
