Another two cents worth ...
A few years ago there was a dipole advertised in QST and other places that claimed to be "broadband with a very low SWR on all bands". Turns out an XRAY of the junction box / center insulator revealed a resistor (50 ohms?) in parallel with the coax connector and the dipole. (;-) 73! Cut and paste from the Chameleon web page "antenna base has an integral broadband impedance matching network allowing broadband antenna tuning. B&W has marketed a broadband folded dipole antenna that has a resistor
terminating the top wire for decades. They are indeed "broadband" and they must have sold a gazillion to the military because you regularly see them over National Guard and Reserve armories. They're great for the military who generally are not chasing DX or weak signals. Hams ... not so much. To their credit, the resistor has never been a secret. 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2013 Cal QSO Party 5-6 Oct 2013 - www.cqp.org On 11/19/2012 2:11 PM, Ken G Kopp wrote: > Another two cents worth ... > > A few years ago there was a dipole advertised in QST and other > places that claimed to be "broadband with a very low SWR on all > bands". Reminds me of Diamond BB-7V (vertical) and BB-6W (wire) antennas.
Takes 200W and analyzer gives nice SWR across HF. We added the length of wire gradually from 6 to 30 meters, and always better it worked. What is inside? I had to open it. Plenty of big resistors ! About 5 % of power is possible to get to the wire, 95% goes to the resistors, which can take the 200W. If you are QRP, you have made compromise with the power. Do not make it again with radiation. To compare with 100W and dipole, you have left much less than 1%. A cheap version of this antenna is a 100w incandescent light bulb
with a few feed of "lamp cord" with a PL-259 attached. If you can load it, it makes a cheap dummy load that leaks RF. What I used as a Novice in the 1960's. I actually made some 40m contacts with the "light bulb" antenna over several hundred miles with 75w from my DX-35. 73, Ed - KL7UW ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Tom, N6BT, of Force12 fame, often concludes his presentations with a tour of his "Illuminator" antenna ... a light bulb in a porcelain socket mounted on a fence post and fed with a short piece of coax with a current choke at the lamp. He claims to have worked all continents with it. He then expanded it to a "phased array" with three bulbs arranged in a Vee, "for additional gain." :-) While on the subject of "too good to be true" antennas, for many years, the US military used very large, physically impressive, HF log-periodic beams. The first one I saw was in 1963 on the roof of the WW2 hangar at Galena AFS in the northern interior of AK, for the MARS station. They had around 15 or so elements on a lattice boom, and I remember thinking, "Wow! That sucker should really radiate." A lot have disappeared [satellite comm?], but you'll occasionally see one at a Natl Guard armory. Basically, 3-30 MHz with low SWR. I was truly disappointed when I discovered it offered maybe 3-4 dB gain on any given frequency. The tribander on the same roof for the ham station [KL7FBK] out-performed it by a significant margin. 73, Fred K6DGW ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

The log likely offered near seamless frequency agility from 3 to 30 MHz without the need for tuners and such. I guess we'll keep searching for that perfect antenna. :-) 73, de Nate, N0NB >> -- "The optimist proclaims that we live in the best of all possible worlds. The pessimist fears this is true." I want 3-30 MHz with at least 10 dB gain. Don't we all? :-) Big doesn't always do it in all departments. In the coastal marine service in 1956/7, our transmit [and receive] antennas were huge by ham standards ... unless you were W6AM. Unfortunately, one antenna per transmit frequency, and most of the HF receive frequencies too. I was just stunned by that LP. I was 23, fresh out of college, a ham for 10 years, but 5 of those were in college, basic training, and officers' school, and pretty much QRT. Biggest beam I'd ever seen. I was equally stunned when I found out exactly how it worked. 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2013 Cal QSO Party 5-6 Oct 2013 - www.cqp.org ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
