I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I can't find any information about it. In measuring the calibration of the S-meter in my KX3, I discovered it is extremely accurate, but only with the pre-amp engaged. With it engaged, S9 is indicated at exactly 50 uV (within the resolution of the display). It is also very accurate up and down the S-meter range, with 6dB corresponding exactly to an S unit. I would have expected it to be calibrated with both the pre-amp and attenuator disengaged. Is there some reason it's calibrated this way? Also, when the firuware is available that automatically accounts for engaging the pre-amp or attenuator, will the indication be referenced to the pre-amp on or off? We are waiting for the S meter absolute mode to be incorporated into the
firmware as it is in the K3, then the meter will correctly read the signal at the antenna socket irrespective of preamp or attenuator settings. I agree that the current situation is somewhat odd, maybe there's a good reason for the delay in its implementation, but I would like this feature enabled as soon as possible. One of the joys of the KX3 (and K3) is the fact that the S meter is so accurate! 73 Stephen G4SJP On 3 October 2013 01:01, [hidden email] <[hidden email]> wrote: > > I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I can't find any > information > about it. > > In measuring the calibration of the S-meter in my KX3, I discovered it is > extremely > accurate, but only with the pre-amp engaged. As others have said, waiting for the FW upgrade to allow ABS (Absolute) metering.
My KX3 Reads correct on 20 meters with the preamp on. 40 and 80 meters show S2 instead of S3 and S8 instead of S9. I hope the new firmware will allow calibration as well, since mine is off a bit. Jim |
