KX3 and P3 Adapter

KM4VX
Great to hear a KX3 amplifier will soon be available from Elecraft.  I have no interest in adding power to my KX3 QRP rig, but I am looking forward to Elecraft selling the adapater so we can use the KX3 with the P3. I hope in the rush to get the amplifier to market Elecraft has not forgotten its earlier plans to develop and sell an adapter for the KX3-P3. Thanks.

I'm not sure where this rumor was started. While we certainly would like to do something like this, we have not announced that we are developing it. We do not have an active project to do this at this time.

We have been absolutely maxed out in engineering on many other projects, including the KXPA100 and the upcoming 2M option for the KX3.

I apologize if any of our postings have created confusion regarding this.

Eric has posed a question regarding the source of the rumor about the development of an adapter to use the P3 with the KX3. In the spirit of full disclosure I quote the following  from the Elecraft archives:

Not so. We also plan to offer a small IQ to P3 adapter for the KX3, which will

Umm... I don't know how else to put this but... Eric, -you- started the
rumor. Back on 18-Dec-2011, while we were waiting on our KX3s, you posted to
this list. For brevity's sake, I have not copied out the entire exchange
that was going on at the time. I know you have a lot of irons in the fire
right now, but hopefully, this could be fit in the queue somewhere. The
hardware would actually be fairly simple, upconverting the KX3 I/Q to the
same IF as the K3...

It's not quite that simple. To be really useful, the KX3 would also have to support the special protocol we use between the P3 and K3 that keeps track of VFO frequencies, modes, filter bandwidth, etc. There's quite a bit of firmware involved. But I agree this would be a nice addition.

My first post to the reflector.  I hope it works out.  I have a KX3
#3147 and absolutely love it.  I was completely spoiled by having owned
a FlexRadio SDR 1000.  I'm sure the majority of P3 owners will agree
that once you have operated with a panadapter, going back to a radio
without one is the equivalent of operating blind.

I use my KX3 as a base station.  I operate QRP exclusively so I don't
need the amp.  I may pick up the FM module.  But I will tell you this.
I'd buy an KX3/P3 adapter and a P3 instantly if Elecraft offered that
setup for sale.

I've got my cheque book out and am ready to go.  Get the project folks
working.

Re: KX3 and P3 Adapter

Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ

Well there you go! Mea Culpa. :-)  The internet forgets nothing. I
apologize for the confusion on this.

Clearly I was the source of the 'rumor' back in 2011.  It is now obvious
to me that it  is easy in the 'fog of battle' to forget what we may have
typed in a quick email reply several years ago. I was overly optimistic
and ahead of our development team on this one. I honestly thought that
in the past that we had only mentioned we were interested in doing it if
we had time, but had not committed to it formally as a future product.
The wide-spread availability of free PC and Apple iOS based s/w
panadapters like HDSDR and iSDR for the KX3 pushed this further down the
development priority list over time.

We certainly would like to do this, but have been focused on the other
key products we have promised (the KXPA100 and KX3 2M option, among
others). As Wayne pointed out in his email reply, this is both a h/w and
a significant f/w project, and we do not have infinite engineering
resources. We're already working overtime here out new products for
everyone to enjoy.

I can't promise anything definite right now, but we will take a look at
it again to see what is possible as we get past the product releases for
the other products mentioned above.

No need to wait or get out the chequebook -- you can hook your KX3 up to your PC right now and get a pan adapter display, just like your Flexradio. This is what the "RX I/Q" output on the KX3 is for.

more than just the hardware. I (and others) would still like to see

I realize that.  But that's not what I want.  Aside from basic logging
functions and a few other things, I'd like my KX3 to remain more or less
independent from my computer.  The P3 would offer a clean solution for
me and hopefully the folks at Elecraft will find a way to make that
happen for the KX3 owners.

A computer upgrade and Windows 7 essentially made a boat anchor out of
my SDR1000.  I'm not particularly interested in going that route again.
I'm an Elecraft customer who would like to buy more Elecraft stuff for
my KX3 and I've got a feeling that I'm not the only person who would be
willing to add P3 to the stable.  The company should make it happen -
sooner rather than later.

Best.

Eric or Wayne, assuming the KX3/P3 interface is feasible, is it possible to build a "PX3"? A small monitor scope, perhaps half the size or less of the KX3? The P3 isn't what I would call portable. Having something small, even with less of a feature set than a P3, would make a great travel companion.

After being out all evening, I came in and sat down to read my e-mails from the Elecraft  reflector and KX3 Yahoo group.  Ron's e-mail below was the last one I read, and I said to myself, "YES, good e-mail, Ron!"  I bought my KX3 to use as a portable rig in nice relaxed backpack, picnic table, and hotel room environments.  I really wanted to get away from computers since I used them for everything in my work.  Then I noticed that when I went out, I had left the KX3 is hooked up to my laptop, running FLDIGI in BPSK31 mode, automatically reporting to PSKReporter, andrunning Rocky in a long skinny window below FLDIGI as a 96khz wide pan adapter.  I am hooked!  HELP ME!  :-0

This isn't what I bought my KX3 for, but it sure is fun!  Now if I can just get it running with iSDR on my iPod Touch using Blue Mikey, I will have a small take-along pan adapter.  HELP ME!!!  I CAN"T GIVE IT UP!

It may come as a huge shock to many on this e-mail reflector, but there are
a significant number of us who would rather never see a computer in the
hamshack. Today most of us live with the darn things all day every day and
significant number of us, like yours truly,  enjoy a respite from the
digital world by being Hams, Hi!

..I'd like my KX3 to remain more or less independent from my computer...

Well then, you better get rid of your Elecraft radios and go back to some analog stuff with drifting VFOs and best guess frequency dials.

Maybe go way back to some Central Electronics exciters (See the current QST) where we converted "Command Set" transmitters to VFOs and went to heroic lengths to stabilize them.

Eric and all:

I recall seeing a KX3 at the Elecraft Booth running a spectrum
display with a tablet and thought: "When was this added?".  I guess
this is the HDSDR or iSDR sw panadapter?

Even though I use many soundcard based sw, there lurks many more
round the corner, apparently.

Speaking of such, I would love to hear recommendations of sw that run
psk-31 on the K3.  I have mine fully integrated with my computer Dell
2.33 duo-core, XP32-SP3.  USB/RS232 conversion cable from Elecraft is used.

I am also interested in psk-31 sw that will run under win-8 pro to
use with my KX3 at FD.

Sorry, wandered far from the original topic.

We were showing an iPad running iSDR for the panadapter with the Griffin
iMic audio interface between the iPad and the KX3's IQ output.
