Hi all,
We're putting the finishing touches on a KX3 field-test firmware release that eliminates the 12-kHz audio spur reported earlier this week. I can't hear it, myself, but I can see it on my spectrum analyzer. In our lab tests the spur is knocked down into the noise -- around 20 dB reduction. Hopefully this will do the trick. The fix we implemented is an improvement on turning on the RX I/Q menu entry. The new method only increases current drain by 3 to 4 mA, while setting RX I/Q to ON increases current drain by about 10-15 mA. This release also includes corrected "Weaver-mode" SSB receive demodulation (greatly reduced opposite-sideband image), and all of the ATU tuning improvements mentioned earlier. If you've been bothered by either the Weaver demod issue or the 12-kHz spur, please email me directly so I can send you the new code. If you sent me a request earlier, and didn't get it yet, that's because I was making further improvements. You're still on my list. tnx Wayne N6KR ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

No improvement here that I can detect in the weaver demod fix.

Interesting. Well, I and a number of other testers have noted better fidelity, and the op who had measured the in-band OSB image at 20 dB reported that it had dropped significantly.
I've been listening to music in the AM broadcast band in SSB mode with FL2 engaged, and it sounds quite clean. 73, Wayne N6KR On Aug 18, 2013, at 4:03 PM, John_N1JM <[hidden email]> wrote: > No improvement here that I can detect in the weaver demod fix. > 73,John N1JM > > > wayne burdick wrote >> Hi all, >> >> We're putting the finishing touches on a KX3 field-test firmware release >> that eliminates the 12-kHz audio spur reported earlier this week. I am listening on a Bose Stereo system not just the internal speaker so the
difference may be more notable. I am also very picky about my audio. 73, Bill K9YEQ K2 FT, KX1 FT, KX3 FT, KAT500 FT -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Wayne Burdick Sent: Sunday, August 18, 2013 6:19 PM To: John_N1JM Cc: [hidden email] Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KX3 firmware update (12-kHz audio spur fixed, etc.) Interesting. I just confirmed that the opposite-sideband image is way down. I believe John was hearing the effect of the notch at 1500 Hz, which is a characteristic of Weaver demodulation. When you inject a carrier and sweep through the SSB passband, the existence of the notch can make it appear that you're hearing both desired and image signals -- but what you're really hearing is just the tone at different pitches on either side of the notch.

I have a huge improvement in the Weaver demod. I did not use it before. The
auto tune memories improvement is also a great upgrade. Thank you Wayne and Elecraft team for continuing to make the KX3 the most remarkable QRP radio ever. I tried this firmware yesterday and it curred some audio artifacts I was
hearing. My guess is that I was picking up some mixing artifacts from the 12 kHz spur that made my KX3 audio sound somewhat harsh, almost raspy. I especially noticed it with CW notes. I emailed Wayne about this firmware release and he thought that it might help - and it did. I wasn't able to do a side by side comparison, but I did switch between firmware releases a few times and I could definitely hear a difference. It now sounds warmer and more well rounded, similar to my K3. It is a lot less fatiguing on my ears. I told Wayne that I can't believe I can still hear stuff like this after 35 years or so in the fire service. Hopefully I can keep it that way. Thanks to Wayne (and everyone else at Elecraft) for continually improving the KX3 experience. 73, Dave W8FGU On 08/16/2013 11:54 PM, Wayne Burdick wrote: > Hi all, > > We're putting the finishing touches on a KX3 field-test firmware release that eliminates the 12-kHz audio spur reported earlier this week.
