KX3 through TSA Security ?

Phil Hystad-3
Has anyone taken a KX3 through TSA security with carry-on luggage?  Are there any issues?  Domestic flight only in this case (WA <--> AZ).

Thanks,

Interested in knowing the deal with this because I am taking my K3 to inlaws in EL09 in two weeks. Thanks for asking Phil.

In reply to this post by Phil Hystad-3
I've flown commercially with my KX3 on three round trips, all domestic
flights.  The KX3 was in the middle of the carry-on bag, padded with
clothing, etc.

The last time out, TSA wanted to inspect the unit, and asked me to
show them the batteries.  No worries with that!

Phil,

I don't own a KX3, but I've taken my FT-857D (once) and my FT-817ND multiple
times (I don't travel with my K3).  I never had any issues with TSA.  They
didn't even bat an eye about them, in fact.  I just made sure I had my
license taped to the rigs and ran them through with my laptop/iPod/other
electronics.

Good luck and have a great trip!

In reply to this post by Phil Hystad-3
Have taken K3 through TSA security many times, including most recent trip to Montserrat.  I put it in a Pelican case.  In most cases they do not bat an eye, and do not even open the case.  I also put a copy of my license and spare cable ties in the case for re-sealing.
Now, the suitcase that has all the wires, coax, spare connectors, etc., etc.  that almost always gets opened after X-ray.  Try explaining some of that stuff to inspectors out of the country!  BTW, if you are going out of the country, it is always a good idea to carry a copy of your receipt w/serial number.

I just travelled round trip between Michigan and Arizona with a KX1 in my
carry-on luggage.  The rig was inside some foam packing, with rubber bands
around it, in a laptop case.  I also had a rack of 8 AA alkaline batteries,
antenna wire, etc., along with an iPad, Kindle, digital camera, a couple of
magazines, and a cell phone charger all in the case.  I sent the bag through the
scanner without opening it up.  It didn't trigger an alarm and I was not asked
to open it up or explain anything.  It was my first experience with taking radio
gear on a plane and I was surprised.

Re: KX3 through TSA Security ?

Lynn W. Taylor, WB6UUT
Strange what gets inspected, and what doesn't.

When I'm flying, I always pack my suitcase using gallon "ziplock" bags.
Clothes, electronics, etc. -- makes it easier for them to search, and
makes packing easier.

The TSA leaves a flyer in checked bags that are inspected.

I carry one bag that is ALWAYS inspected -- my Curling brooms.

I have traveled extensively for my work on airlines for the past 20 years. I have taken my QRP rigs on many airlines with wires cables and my HFp potable antenna as carry on. I have never been asked to open my bag as carry on. I have also taken lots of test equipment as carry on and have never been questioned. That is not to say you might be asked to open your checked baggage. It has been my experience to just be patient with the TSA guys and do what they ask. Keep a smile on your face. What ever you do don't give TSA a big attitude and you will be fine. The TSA folks are just doing their job to keep everyone safe even if you do not agree with how they do it. I have also gone to Canada from the US and back many times without issue.

Just my two cents worth

Thanks guys for the input in TSA and the KX3.  I have also traveled extensively for work (domestic and international) but never have taken a radio anywhere.

P.S.  I never give TSA (or, anyone else) a bad attitude about anything.

Whatever you do, don't describe any kind of interconnect cabling as
"Bomb Wire."

They don't see the humor in that.

Re: KX3 through TSA Security ?

I took my K3 and KPA-500 to J6 in 2011 carry on.  No issues.  Just be
prepared for them to take you aside and check it out.

I was stopped a few times and other time waved on by.  I did talk to one
of the TSA guys and he said that I should have been stopped each and
every time because of what the stuff looked like under the xray.

They swabbed the rig and amp for explosives.  No big deal.  Just keep
your ham license handy.

I take my K3 to Aruba in a backpack several times a year.  About half the
time, TSA at SFO flags it and asks me to take it out of the backpack to be
run through separately.  But that has never been any kind of problem, other
than a few minutes delay.

Re: KX3 through TSA Security ?

Before retiring I was doing about 250K miles a year on United for my
employer.  The KX3 hadn't yet been invented but I usually traveled with
an HT and sometimes a NorCal-40 with wire antenna and a mini-paddle.  I
was never denied boarding with them.  However the amount of "attention"
they got at TSA was, as best as I could discern, a function of which
airport I was at, time of day, the phase of the moon, and whether or not
Saturn was somewhere.

I wear braces on both legs from old injuries, I always fly in cargo
shorts so they can see them, and I always get some "attention."  The
radios were a crap shoot however.  Heading for Ft Lauderdale and a Canal
Cruise, I took my KX1 and a wire antenna.  I opted against the MP-1
since the resonator looks a lot like a pipe bomb on the Xray.  Nobody
even asked about the radios.  I always had a copy of my license and the
radio manual with them.  YMMV

We don't fly anymore (last trip was overseas 7 years ago) but take
AMTRAK on a regular basis - no inspections, no hassle, no problem using
the radio onboard.  When we did fly, the last time that a radio
(handheld) was questioned was in 1992 (pre-TSA).  The 2007 trip involved
six security checks and not once was my h-h questioned by TSA or the
foreign equivalents.

I've been on the other side of the counter - 28 years as an FCC agent,
now safely retired - and I always appreciated folks that had "good"
attitude.

For sure.  A law school classmate of mine made some joke about
hi-jacking and they wrote him up.  Kept him from being admitted to the
bar for a year until it was expunged from his record.
