I think you’re going to have to wait a bit for this one. The KX2 kinda slipped in there with a lot of bang fit the buck. And in a real small package.

My KX3 is such a kickass radio, Its slow for me to think of upgrades not

I would like to see a built-in sound card for digital modes. As far as I know there is no small, portable rig that has this feature. I do expect that a KX4 is either on the drawing boards or at least has been discussed by the Elecraft brain trust (aka Eric & Wayne). 73 de Carl

The built-in sound card idea has been suggested, but I'd think you'd also need an accurate clock for the FT modes... perhaps via a GPS receiver.
Yes, the KX2 is smaller, lighter, etc... but the KX3 is not particularly large or heavy. So, maybe a KX4 would be about the same size as the KX3... or possibly a bit larger to accommodate some neat extra features. Nevertheless, I still like my KX3. 73 de RayK2ULRKX3 #211 -----Original Message----- From: Doug Hensley <[hidden email]> To: Elecraft List <[hidden email]> Sent: Tue, Aug 20, 2019 12:56 pm Subject: [Elecraft] KX4 Features ?? The part of operating the KX3 I like the least is switching
between SSB and digital. I have to change the mic and headphones out and connect the sound card. On my K3, I just change the mode switch. Having an internal sound card would probably eliminate this hassle. I like the KX2 form factor. For this kind of radio, small is good. It would be nice to support all the bands the KX3 supports -- 160, 6, and 2 meters. 160M support could be through a small external box, since pedestrian mobile on 160 doesn't seem likely. For ARES/RACES use, 70 cm would be needed. 73 Bill AE6JV On 8/20/19 at 11:30 AM, [hidden email] (David Gilbert) wrote: >What does the built in sound card buy you? I currently often use my KX2 with a QRPworks SideKar Plus and type on a 2.4 GHz qwerty keyboard. My wishlist would include the ability to either plug in a USB keyboard or use a Bluetooth qwerty keyboard for text input directly to the radio. Also, i would love a more versatile radio display which would be at least have the additional capability of displaying a single long horizontal scrolling [high resolution] line of text across the full width of the bottom edge of the radio display (instead of sequestering the VFO B display to reveal a whole seven characters of scrolling text)
I can think of a slew of other features; but bundling the functionality of the SideKar into the radio would be a wonderful thing Cheers es 73 de KX2CW .. ~joan P.S: i enjoy not dragging along a laptop for radio camping (although this habit currently limits me to the current suite of text modes bundled into the Elecraft firmware, i.e. PSK, FSK [RiTTY], and CW). I wonder what other modes might be feasible to bundle into the radio’s own firmware. Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra, said Piglet. Speculation mode engaged.
For one thing, if a USB Hub functionality was also built in, you then only need one physical USB connection between radio and computer, and you could have full Rig Control, + USB Audio I/O, a well as the usual KX3 utility functionality (firmware updates etc.) Ideally, a galvanically isolated USB link to/from the outside world, preventing ground loops. Such devices are available, such as (but not only) :- https://www.analog.com/en/products/ltm2884.html (Not the smallest of implementations, just referenced as an example of available functionality, available now.) No noisy micro SMPS needed either, as the rig already has it's own internal power for the internal side, and the PC would power (via the cable) the "external" side. From what I recall of the KX3 schematic, the Audio codec chip has plenty of unused spare audio I/O lines, so at the very least, analogue Audio I/O could (in principle) be possible with minimal changes to the physical design (but not firmware I suspect.) Easy for me to say that, I don't have to do it. But that alone would make an excellent rig even better. 73. Dave G0WBX. One thing it buys you is compatibility with user expectations. The K3s has
a builtin USB sound card, so leaving it out of the K4 would not meet user expectations of what flagship rig like the K4 should look like. Considering there's a USB sound card built into most modern rigs now, it would look bad when comparing them. I can even hear the whining and moaning now "You are telling me that the IC-7300, which costs less than a quarter of the price of the K4 has a built-in sound card and the K4 does not?" -Eric On Tue, Aug 20, 2019 at 11:48 AM David Gilbert <[hidden email]> wrote: > > What does the built in sound card buy you? Just in case there's any doubt, the K4 has a complete, multiplatform-compatible sound card interface via its USB-B connector, with two virtual control ports and stereo digital audio. That's in addition to three USB-A ports, true RS232 via DE9 for legacy station interfaces, full analog audio I/O, HDMI, and the usual ACC jack. It's a superset of the KIO3B.

A feature that should be included in the "K4" is a software addition that will allow one to
send digital via the rear audio in connector while operating USB (upper sideband) with the front mike. I use the current K3+ on AirForce/Army Mars. I need to be able to switch from digital (M110A) to voice on a moments notice so can not use the digital modes. The mike is hot while transmitting digital. Most mikes leave the mike element hot. The PTT is a SPST switch. This means that you have to be careful not to have any noise in the shack while transmitting digital. If there is a way on the K3, service was not able to point it out. It would be very surprising to me if K3 and K4 had such a limitation. This situation is handled perfectly in the Kenwood TS-590 by using 2 distinct keying commands. Front panel PTT is equivalent to CAT TX0; and takes modulation from the front panel mic jack. TX1; and the equivalent ACC hardware PTT, take modulation from the USB Audio CODEC or ACC analog audio input leaving the mic muted. Switching between front mic and digital is simply accomplished by asserting the appropriate PTT line or CAT command. The digital mode application asserts TX1; Keying mode cannot be changed while transmitting so first keying command wins until TX stops. 73, Andy, k3wyc ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to [hidden email] |
That is the way my old TS-570 is but my K3 has only 1 ptt line, but if I am
not mistaken in digital modes the mic is muted. I am not sure of that since I hardly ever have a mic plugged in, but I think that is what I read in the book.
