Keeping Powerpoles Together

Joel R. Hallas
Folks

I put an item in "The Doctor is IN" in Aug 2008 QST, p 63, on hints for assembling APP connectors. In addition, there is a photo of how I keep stressed Powerpoles together using a 1/16 inch tie wrap. In addition to keeping the connectors mated, it also keeps the pairs together as does a roll pin, but avoids the possibility of a roll pin falling into something.

The downside is that if you want to disconnect the the connection, you need to clip the tie-wrap. OTOH, I haven't priced them, but I bet a bag of tie-wraps is cheaper than any special clamping arrangement -- and probably more compact.

Has anyone found a practical way to secure the Powerpole connection to
the K3? I manage to dislodge mine all too frequently.

KENT TRIMBLE
Bryan . . .

Look at the Anderson Powerpole jack on your K3.  One of the lugs on mine
was not extended far enough outward to allow it to seat properly because
the lead going to it was too short.  Rather than remove the previously
soldered wire and attach a longer one, the installer merely jammed the
lug in as far it would go and let it go at that.  It made power-contact,
but not mechanical-contact, which ultimately meant it didn't take much
for the power cord to slip off the jack.  It took most of an afternoon
to disassemble, repair, and reassemble.

Since it was Serial Number 21, I chalked it up to early-production
problems.  Even highly conscious quality-control companies can have
quality-control issues at times.

Art Collins had his bad days, too.

For Art, that day occurred when riveted RCA phono connectors were chosen for
the RF antenna ports on the "S" line -- just as Heathkit did on the HW-101.

There is something wrong with either the power lead APP build or the
APP on the K3 - they should not pull out that easiy.
