Learning CW

Martin.Evans
Hi folks, just thought I would send a quick report on my CW progress since
many of you guys have helped me many times over the last 18 months.
I've been practising head copy off tape at 20wpm for many months now
coupled with on air qso at about 15wpm, well my cw copy has been steadily
improving but slowly, until yesterday, I was just listening around 80m and
found myself copying in my head at around 22wpm very easily (mind you it
was good code) , something has clicked into place, I don't know why but it
just seems to be so much easier all of a sudden, the small words are just
copied automatically and I seem to be able to hold more characters in my
head for the longer ones. I had a real long rag chew last night at about
18wpm with almost 100% copy in my head.  Wow this is a real breakthrough,
at last I really feel comfortable with cw. It's taken about 2years and at
least 30mins a day on most days plus the on air time, I feel a real sense
of accomplishment. For any guys who are still learning cw my advice is to
keep at it, it may take a long time but it's worth it. I've always had
trouble with copying to paper above about 15wpm, I find the co-ordination
difficult, so I gave it up months ago and just concentrated on head copy, I
think that was a good move for me.

BTW the K1 is going great.

Martin,

Congratulations and thanks for a great story! Keep it up!

At some point you may find (if you haven't already) that working Morse can
actually be easier than talking. Particularly with a good op at the other end.

Enjoy!

I hadn't worked any CW since about 1976 when I built my K1 last month. I was
at about 25 WPM at that time. I'm finding I max out around 18 WPM now. So
once you get it, it seems to stick with you pretty good.

Now it gets even better.  Once you get above 25 or so, for some reason
the code starts to seem more fluid, which seems more enjoyable, and
that's a big motivating factor for increasing speed further.  It's
almost as if you don't have to *try* to practice, you just want to
listen and operate, and the practice is simply a convenient side effect.

When I learned CW, I found that the single most motivating factor was
simply seeing improvement.

Congrats on getting to ths point.  The fun is just beginning!

Hallo Martin,
vy congrats to your results: every time one learn CW is a good new for us!
I remember when I was at University and I was studying some difficult
mathematcis, or electronics formula, every day I used to repeat, to write,
to read, and I was frighten as the exam was coming soon. Then, when I was a
four, three days far from exam: suddenly all was clear, as my brain war
suddenly different, and I was amazed as all was so clear and...EASY. And so
I passed all exams. This means that if you do the right job, continously, at
your time (it's different from mine) you'll arrive at result. And in CW is
the same. And this is the beautifull of our mind, as CW as a mind
exercise....
So Martin enjoy this new picture, enjoy the have a good reading, and in
future, maybe you'll remember this period as a training period, and you'll
be on 200 wpm speed....hi!

All the best, hope to meet you on the air on CW- QRP of course (I'm not a
very fast CW'er).

RE: Learning CW

Ron D'Eau Claire-2

Congratulations, Martin!

I like to tell people, and there's *some* truth to the story, that the
reason that I've worked 99.9% CW for 50+ years now is that I put so much
time and energy into learning the code I wanted to get my money's worth out
of it!

A lot of people have trouble with hand copy on paper over 15 wpm or so. I
had to teach myself a different way of printing block characters to reduce
the number of pencil strokes and to keep the pencil moving right to left in
order to hand copy at 20 wpm for my commercial radiotelegraph and Extra
class Ham tests. Like you said, it's hard enough to do anything else while
copying near your limit. Of course, the only thing I hand copy nowadays is a
formal message and that's almost always on a keyboard.

CW is far from dead. Indeed, with so many newer ops showing up on the bands,
it's sure to be a popular mode for many decades to come, at least. As
President Kennedy observed many years ago, we do some things not because
they are easy, but because they are hard.

Perhaps everything worth doing is hard, at first anyway. Enjoy. You've got a
skill that will bring you a lot of pleasure over the years.

73,

Ron AC7AC

Martin,

Keep up the great work.  Please write an article about learning CW too and get it circulated around.  You can be an inspiration....

After 40 years of CW as a ham, I find that sometimes I can have a QSO, read QST or Watch TV at the same time.  It just takes practice.

I still thing CW is the "funnest" modes of communication...even though it has been label and antiquated.  BS!

Hello Martin,

Sincere congratulations, fantastic!!!. Many thanks for the inspiration and
kick-start as well. The local CW has drifted from reasonable down to <<<<<
pathetic due to a long absence.

Nice to "see" you again.

Geoff.
