I'm making the transition to electronic logging and wonder which logging program those of you running Apple computers (I use an iBook) have used successfully? MacLoggerDX is the best for a Mac user in my opinion.

I use MacLogger DX as well, but note that you have an iBook and 5.33 is the last PowerPC version. It appears that Don, like a lot of others, has begun the process of discontinuing PPC support. > I'l be using it with my K3-100 and rig control would be nice, too! > Thank, in advance, for any responses! > 73, > Cary, K4TM > K#-100 #3448 and K2-1004991 -- Jeremy McDermond (NH6Z) Xenotropic Systems [hidden email] ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

In my opinion MacLoggerDx is not the best if you are a DX'er. Especially if you are a K3 user.
RUMLog is far better for sorting cluster spots and for keeping track of countries worked and confirmed on LoTW or paper. Also, for doing one-click uploads and downloads to LoTW. RUMLog also has an excellent K3 panel that checks many functions of the radio and lets you directly access the M1-M8 memories and set up a bunch of macros. It also lets you access the K3 keyer for CW or the direct RTTY functions of the K3. I have not found a better program for the Mac than RUMLog for color coding incoming spots (on several clusters) and quickly letting you figure out your status for a DXCC entity. For casual operating MacLoggerDX is great but for the DX'er with a K3 RUMLog is better. IMHO. BTW, I have used both for 5+ years. Hi Cary,
The premiere general purpose logging program for the Mac is MacLoggerDX from DogPark Software. It incorporates many features including rig control, DX clusters and spotting, automatic beam steering, 2D or 3D map, and much more. It is actively supported with frequent updates by Don Agros and costs $95 for a single use license. I have been using it for five years and am very happy with it. RUMlog is a free program for the Mac that should be considered. It has become quite popular and has incorporated more features over time. It's strengths include enhanced tracking and management of qso's for various award pursuits. RUMped is a DX-pedition and contesting logger specifically tailored to those activities. It is also free. jLog is another free program for the Mac. It's a pretty basic, simplified logger without a lot of bells and whistles. These are the programs that I'm aware of but I'm sure there are some others out there. My descriptions above are brief and may not fully capture the value of each program. I'm a MacLoggerDX user so I know more about it. You should check all their web pages and read the reviews on eHam.net to decide which best meets your needs. I agree that RUMlog is by far the better program, especially for the DXer. It is well written, intuitive, and loaded with useful features. Above all, the program is actively supported by the author and in the time I've used it, have not seen any bugs. I tried MacLoggerDx and simply couldn't get the same level of usefulness from it. It's a free program, but for the quality of work and effort that has been put into it, a contribution to the author is in order, in my opinion.

Version 4 of MLDX is still available and runs on Tiger, but as you say, is not being improved.

does RUMLog support microHAM (specifically microKeyer mk1) ?

Yes, RUMLog supports microHAM "keyer" interfaces. DL2RUM has modified Chen (W7AY's) uH Router and uses it with microHAM "Keyer" interfaces. He also uses Chen's cocoModem for digital operation. 73, ... I use MacLoggerDX for my casual operating. The support is superb. I've tried RumLog and found it to work well. I particularly like the K3 control panel. However, for contesting I've found that Skookum Logger http://www.k1gq.com/SkookumLogger/about.html is the best on the Mac. RUMped is an option but does not have support for a number of contests and is not being updated. Bill, K1GQ, is constantly updating the Skookum Logger software and just this week added the Oceania contest for me (in just a few hours after my request). I'll also mention that the software is free! Plus, it has some great documentation.
Hope that helps. I also sometimes use Skookum Logger for CW contests but find RUMLog better for Digital contests.
The ESM mode for RTTY contests is magic! BTW, Tom has been updating the program and his contest maker app is pretty slick (especially if you sucker him in to helping you..) for setting up unknown contests. I can't say enough good things about RUMLog/RUMped. Tom (DL2RUM) is very
active in supporting his software. He has added great support for Fldigi into RUMLog, such as auto-import of logs from Fldigi and tracking of frequency/mode from Fldigi. This was done literally in a few day's of work by Tom, and was something that Don (MacLoggerDX) didn't even want to touch since Fldigi wasn't a pure OS X product. Also, Tom owns a K3, so support for the K3 is superb in his software I've found that RUMlog suits me and my operating the best. While MacLoggerDX may be prettier, I like the clean simplicity of RUMlog. HOWEVER, that clean simplicity hides a LOT of power...RUMlog is flexible and has a lot of features. Besides Fldigi, RUMlog also supports working with cocoaModem, has support for the microKeyer II, and has better award/QSL tracking than MacLoggerDX. Ultimately, the best Mac logging software is whichever one does what you want it to do. A good balance between RUMlog and MacLoggerDX may be Aether, which has a very nice interface and does some good award/QSL tracking at a price that is fairly reasonable (apx $40, if I recall correctly and available via the App Store). However, I've seen some ADIF import issues with Aether (improper tracking of LoTW/eQSL/Paper QSL on import). Ultimately, there is a lot of great software out there for the ham using a Mac. Try them all and you'll find one that you like. 73 Dave On Sun, Oct 2, 2011 at 11:05 AM, Rick Prather <[hidden email]> wrote: > I also sometimes use Skookum Logger for CW contests but find RUMLog better > for Digital contests. > > The ESM mode for RTTY contests is magic! > > BTW, Tom has been updating the program and his contest maker app is pretty > slick (especially if you sucker him in to helping you..) for setting up > unknown contests. > > Rick > K6LE > > > On 10/2/2011, at 5:53 , Jim Wilson wrote: > > > I use MacLoggerDX for my casual operating.
