XG3 Band Change

EricJ-2
/I got my XG3 yesterday and it works fine. It'll be a great addition to
the workbench.

But there's one anomaly. The Band change buttons work backwards from
every other piece of Elecraft gear. On my K1 and K2 Band+ takes me to
the next higher frequency band. On the XG3, Band+ takes me to the next
numerically higher band (lower frequency).

Maybe this is some legacy of the days when we called 160 meters "Top
Band". Whatever, it seems strange in that no other Elecraft works that
way. And I don't know anyone who thinks 10 meters is lower than 160 meters.

Great piece of gear, though, and the Utility makes it even more useful.

Don Wilhelm-4
Eric,

I know, that was a bit 'confusing' to me at first, but if you think of
it as up or down the row of band LEDs, it is easier to deal with.

This was a subject of debate among the engineering staff. We tried it both ways during field testing and settled on the present behavior. After you've had time to bond with your XG3, you will come to appreciate the subtle wisdom in this decision. Or not :)

Interesting, I push the wrong button first *every* time :-)

Despite that, I have to say that it is by far and away the most useful bit
of test gear (apart from a multimeter and a scope) that I have ever owned!

Reminds me of the classic discussions I have had over the years regarding band/frequency changes.  You're going up? down?

In over 50 yrs of ham radio, I've never heard ANYONE on a lower band say they
are going down to 10 meters, or 6 meters.  My sentence above points right at it.
I said a LOWER band.  Even the old timers said "I'm going down to 160 meters."
Why fight tradition?

I always wondered why I always hit the wrong button on the XG (nice product, by
the way).  I never stopped to think about it.  The good news is, the lower
button moves the LED in the same physical direction as the button pressed.  :o)

I spent a couple of hours with it on the bench this afternoon and I
gravitated towards your suggestion, Don. Once that became a habit, I
quit hitting the wrong button every time.

It's already a great addition to the shack and the workbench.

Probably because I design Human Interfaces (hardware and software) for a
living, this was my first impression.  I was simply navigating up or down a
stack of LEDs.  I never thought about the buttons in terms of wavelength or
frequency.

But I'll admit that despite hamming it up for 43 years, I still don't feel
comfortable calling 160 meters "The Top Band" and can never think of 70 cm
as my personal "Bottom Band". I've always thought in terms of frequency,
like QSY.  Up to me means increasing frequency not reducing the wavelength.

Love my XG3!

In the early days of wireless, it was all wavelength ... "600 meters,"
which sort of made sense because your antenna often determined the
"frequency" of your transmitter.  Hams were finally relegated to "200
meters and down."  When vacuum tubes came along, we all began thinking
more in frequency than wavelength.

The reason we Old Timers think in terms of frequency like everyone else
is because, despite being old, we're not THAT old.  Those "wavelength"
OT's are all dead now. :-)
