Mic plug

Nick Waterman
Does Elecraft sell a mic plug to mate with the k2 mic socket?

Otherwise, anyone know exactly what I'm looking for? It's not simply an
"8-pin DIN mic plug", is it?

Anyone know where to find some in the UK?

* Maplin are getting more and more useless every week and seem to have
nothing like it.

* RSWWW seem to have millions of connectors, but it's difficult to work
out which one's right

* Electrovalue have one or 2 that might be right

The type is 8 pin Foster connector. I don't know if the UK has a
different name for it.

Hi Lee,

Known as a "locking line socket 8-way" in one of the main component
supplier's catalogue in the UK. Not heard the term Foster used in the UK though
presume that may be the Japanese microphone manufacturer who may have been the
originator.

They are a socket rather than a plug as that plug part is mounted on the K2
or whatever transceiver uses this type of connector. Despite this  are
commonly referred to as an 8 way mic plug. Still prefer them by a long  way to the
RJ45 connector that has just about become standard for anything used  mobile.

Regards,
Bob, G3VVT

You can get one from Maplin, so they're not completely useless just yet
(won't be long though, I'm afraid) .  It's called a "8 way locking line
socket" and the part number is FK30H.
They currently have 180 in stock and the unit price is £2.13

It is the same plug that's used by Kenwood radios, if that helps!

Hi All,

The local Mc Donald seem to be out of stock on 8 pin mic plugs, though did
offer a Big Mac as an alternate.

The differences between what is available in various countries can be a
problem. One gets comfortable with what is available in your own country in  terms
of products and vendors when such things may just not exist in other
countries.

One of the minor problems here in the UK in respect to working on USA
sourced radios and test equipment is a lack of small bolts and nuts to USA  thread
standards. Europe and the Far East seem to be standardised on metric  for the
equipment produced there, which makes life a whole lot easier.

But, you would have had to pay higher prices, since the name would be:

Imported Kentucky Fried Chicken

Don't underestimate The Colonel....he has to get rid of those chicken feet
somewhere.

Re: Mic plug

It's  been argued here for over 200 years and was closer to happening
20-30 years ago than presently.  Some military contracts in the 1970s
and 80s actually called for the drawings to be metric (this was later
dropped).  Oh well, I guess the expense of two sets of wrenches,
etc., isn't all that bad (anyone for Whitworth?)

The UK is a strange mix, temperatures in C, petrol sold by the litre,
highway signs in miles, beer by the (Imperial) pint.

FWIW, the signs on US Interstate Highway 19 between Tucson and
Nogales, Arizona are exclusively in km, although the small green
markers on the side of the highway are in miles.

Re: Mic plug

Dave G3VGR
I remember going to a local timberyard near London some years ago &
asking for some 2x2 timber. The bloke there said "You can't get that
anymore, it's all metric now. What you need is 50mm by 50mm"
After I replied that the metric size would be ok, he asked me how many
feet I wanted.

In 1B in my section SCV, I placed #3 in SCV (scored as 1B1) with my K2.
Wayne N6KR placed #1 in the SCV section (scored as 1B2B) with his KX1 as
"The Ecotopians."  They had 3x the points I did!

One size doesn't fit all (WAS: Mic plug)

It's  been argued here for over 200 years and was closer to happening
20-30 years ago than presently.  Some military contracts in the 1970s
and 80s actually called for the drawings to be metric (this was later
dropped).  Oh well, I guess the expense of two sets of wrenches,
etc., isn't all that bad (anyone for Whitworth?)

-------------------------------------------------------------

Metric was adopted by the US Government as the *standard* system of weights
and measures in the USA in the 1800's. What Congress failed to do back then
was *require* its use. As Bob notes, they tried to mandate it a few years
ago, based on the billions of US$ it'd save us every year, but there was
darn near a revolt protesting it.

So Metric comes to us Yanks by stealth. We used to buy a quart of a soft
drink, not it's a litre (or liter) more often than not, if one looks at the
fine print. We used to buy a pound of something, now we get 0.45 kg
according to the package, and so on.

In the mean time, you can often find me in the CW portion of the 40
met...er...the 1570.8 inch band. Or should it be the 43.74 yard band?
