Hey Ian,
You might start a riot! Now I happen to know that you Brits put your day first then your month, so your 11/6 order date is actually Juen 11th, right? Problem is over here that would be interpreted as November 6th, and a whole bunch of folks would start getting excited about you jumping over them. Hi. I know--we doing everything backwards here in the colonies! I worked VP6DX yesterday on 30 meters using my K3's built-in RTTY function
and the memory keys. Ran it at 100 watts to my 40 meter ladder-line fed dipole. It barely got warm! This is very cool! (I know, it's a poor pun but, I'll take it!) This phrase has been attributed to Churchill, Shaw, Wilde, Russell and more
I dare say in one way or another. David G3UNA > > David Yarnes you are my hero of the day! Good call! David,
You are right. There is some confusion about who said it first. I thought George Bernard Shaw said it first, but my good friend G4WIF insists it was Churchill. I fear he may be right! But whoever said it was very astute! Dave W7AQK _______________________________________________ Don't be surprised if you see things changing in the future. I've been involved with technology engineering in foreign markets for over 40 years and teaching in a high school technology program for over 20 of those years. Now I'm retired from engineering and teaching 4 classes a day at the nearby high school. I'm certificated staff and that requires me to be fluent in several languages. Locally that's English, Spanish, and several asian dialects. As luck would have it my parents were/are fluent in German and I studied French, neither of which has been of great value except in the case of Vietnamese. Anyway - the point is the students in one class of 21 alone are an aggregate of 5 different languages and we freely use them in classroom dialogue to communicate with each other - that's the trend of the future. Why do I bother with this? Teaching technology is only as good as your ability to communicate and these students will be in high demand for their ability. I already have two kids who just realized they have relatives in a position to export from our number one exporter (China) and have found a renewed interest in their education. (Ever wish you could talk to the guy who designed your motherboard) For a lot of people, you call someone who speaks two languages "Boss." 73 es gud luck in the contest : ) Al WA6VNN **************Ideas to please picky eaters. I was informed, quite vehemently in fact, that American does not only apply to people who live in the US but to those in all of the Americas. My classmate from Colombia was proud of the fact that he was an American. Thus Americans might speak only one language but their mother tongue may not be English but Portuguese, Spanish, Quechua, Inuit, or French.
However, my friend was facile in three languages and capable in two others. Though he was earning his doctorate in computer engineering he gave me some interesting insight into the literature of Europe and the Americas. I am indebted to him for introducing me to the work of Umberto Eco. Kevin.
