NB Verses DSP? Do I Need the Noise Blanker?

Michael Harvey

Upon a recent used (Built) K2 purchase, I have been told by two K2 builder/operators that since the K2 has the DSP installed, I didn't need the noise blanker. I was under the impression that the noise blanker targeted man made systematic noise while the DSP worked more on the signal end of things. Does DSP filter out the things that the noise blanker previously took care of or am I wrong?

They two are very different and attack different kinds of noise.  If you
have pulse noise (ignition, for example) then the KNB2 is a worhy
addition to your DSP-equipped K2.

The KDSP offers Noise REDUCTION, but NOT an effective noise BLANKER!!!

The noise reduction is quite good at what it does, and that's reducing the
background noise during reception... but it's NOT a replacement if you need
a BLANKER.

As with just about any blanker, the noise blanker must 'see' the appropriate
type (characteristics) of noise before it can do a decent of of blanking it,
but when it DOES see the right noise, it will do a very nice job. It likes
to see repetitively-spiked noises, such as line noise, ignition noise, and
the noise your XYL's electric mixer or the neighbor's electric fencer makes.

Now, if Elecraft could just offer a noise blanker that
blanks the noise that the XYL makes when she wants you
to take her shopping, you to mow the lawn, you to
paint the house, etc.

Funny....I have the same noise signature at this location.. Meanwhile, I second your request.

DSP on SSB

Michael Jensen
In reply to this post by Tom Hammond-2
Hi all

I am thinking about adding the last option to my K2, the DSP. Currently I am
a SSB guy. Using also Digital modes there.
I know the DSP do great stuff on CW, but what about SSB. Do any of you have
an opinion you like to share on this. Is the DSP value for money on SSB.

Reason for asking are that I have DSP on my IC703, but hardly ever use it,
as the voice quality with DSP seems to make it harder to copy.

Thanks in advance

Re: DSP on SSB

RobertG
Michael...

I have the DSP unit on my #5957 K2. As you mention, it's excellent on
CW.  I don't do much SSB, so there may be aspect/settings of the DSP with
that mode of which I am unaware. So, my comments should be read with that
in mind. For me, on SSB it's more of a hindrance than a help. It seems to
distort the sound to the point where searching for stations, especially in
a contest or a pileup is almost impossible. If I find a strong station in
the clear and then activate the DSP, I can fiddle with tunning and settings
so that I can understand the station, but even then it's only so-so. But,
obviously, that's not a typical situation. YMMV.
