NEW TO THE LIST

Bob Peters

Hi All.. I am considering the purchase of a K3. I have been told to go with
the lp-pan and when I read what the new pan adapter does

It looks like this will do the same as the lp-pan or am I wrong. Will the
pan adapter show frequency??? Will it show the menu's?? What is the benefit
of

The lp-pan over the elecraft pan adapter???

Re: NEW TO THE LIST [P3 vs. LP-Pan]

Hi Bob,

The LP-Pan uses a PC for its display. Many operators prefer a stand-
alone Panadapter like our new P3, which sits beside the K3 and doesn't
require a PC for operation.

The P3 is very tightly integrated with the K3 -- basically plug-and-
play. It displays the K3's VFO A and B frequencies, VFO bandwidths,
and QSY markers so you can jump to a desired signal easily. The P3's
firmware is continuing to evolve, and in the future it will provide
additional features. There's a daisy-chain IF OUT output so you could
connect an LP-Pan in addition to the P3, if you'd like.

The kit version of the P3 is very easy to build. No soldering
required. Building it yourself will save you $50.

I'm probably biased :)  You can find customer reviews of the P3 at:

P3 and LP-PAN / PowerSDR-IF each have strengths and weaknesses. You'll need to do some research to see which suits your situation better. I will just briefly mention three clear differences...

The most obvious difference is that P3 doesn't require a PC, and is basically plug-and-play. LP-PAN requires knowledge of PCs and sound cards. Some people find it trivial to set up, but some have difficulty. How your PC is configured plays into this.

Another obvious difference is the screen size and resolution. I run mine at 1680x1050 (vs. 480x272 for P3), and can fill the display with the pan and/or waterfall if I want. This provides much better resolution for wide spans. To be fair, P3 provides better resolution at narrow spans, but I suspect you would use wider spans most often.

Not so obvious is that PowerSDR-IF is not just a display, but a full receiver with all the DSP bells and whistles and very high quality sound through the sound card outputs. It actually provides two receivers, tied to both VFO A and VFO B, so that you can see and listen to both sides of a split QSO simultaneously without the need for a KRX3 as long as the two signals are within the 192kHz maximum display width. It does not provide diversity reception, or QSK capability.

For more specifics, feel free to email or call me directly.

Another significant difference is that LP-PAN can be used with other
third party software like CW Skimmer, or any future application (band
activity analysis, propagation studies, etc) that may require an
SDR-type front end.  There currently is no such capability with the P3,
and none has been discussed for the future.

For completeness' sake, I should mention that there are significant
planned hardware and firmware extensions to the P3. I can't go into
the details right now, but suffice to say that it will continue to
evolve.

The P3 can be considered part of the K3 system -- no computer required.

I've owned and used an LP-Pan for a while. I liked it,  the software
associated with LP-Pan burns a lot of computer resources, and so does my
contest logging software. With both running, there's not much left for
the computer to send voice messages, etc. And, I had to reorganize my
operating desk to find room for a computer monitor for the display. The
existing computer screen (a laptop) was already full to overflowing with
my contest logging software.

When the P3 was introduced, I immediately ordered two, one for each of my
K3s that work in an SO2R (single-operator-two-radio) contesting setup.

Why did I do that? For the reasons noted above, and because the combined
cost of a computer, LP-Pan, and high quality, broadband audio sound card
comes pretty close to the cost of a P3 (in kit form). And I would have
two extra computer monitors to find room for on my operating desk, which
is already full to overflowing.

I received the P3s a week or so ago, and am pleased. Took less than an
hour to build each of them. I'm also working on a short list of software
suggestions for the design team. :)

Its also important to note that the P3 explicitly provides an IF
output to down-converter boxes like LP-PAN and the softrock board. This
in turn sirectly supports directly supports any PC-Based s/w like
skimmer etc.
