Need a kit recomendation (off topic a little)

Alan Price-3

I purchased an AM radio kit for my five year old grandson.  It was a piece of #@#$%!  Did not even work when I completed it.  Does anyone know of a simple radio kit (like the old Heath crystal radio kit) that is of decent quality?  He was so disappointed, I was also.  He loves to listen while make HF contacts using my K3.

Alan, look at the Ten Tec kits - they have a few receivers and their kits
are top notch.  They're regens so you know they're simple!

Good luck

You might look at the "Softrock 40" small board.  Great capability.  It does
have some SMT surface mount chips on it.  I am sure you can get some help
with them if you need to like I did for the first time. Small, cheap  (was
$10 in the beginning).  It is a receiver or a single band or another kit I
think has up to 4 bands and it sends data to the PC and decodes CW and audio
SSB and even psk I think.  The display looks like a spectrum scope and you
click and it decodes or you hear the ssb audio.  Neat.  The K3 version (vs
40, 20 , 15, 10 meter versiond) can also be used as a spectrum display for
the K3 I am told.

Hi Alan,

Please consider MFJ's 8100K regenerative receiver kit. It provides reasonable
shortwave performance, and its regeneration control can be adjusted for ssb
and cw reception. The radio's open layout makes it a good kit for beginners,
and the $80 price includes a nice case. The kit assembly even requires the
winding of one toroid.

I used to teach an "Introduction to Radio" course for liberal arts students, most
of whom had never before seen a soldering iron. They had a ball building these
radios, and the few radios that did not work when first turned on were easy to
troubleshoot.

I built the Ten Tec 1254 several years ago and found it to be straightforward to build and an excellent performer.  When I needed a bit of help, Ten Tec service provided it.

The reviews in "Passport to World Band Radio" describe it as "the only world band receiver kit worth considering."

Re: Need a kit recomendation (off topic a little)

Hi Alan and all,

You might want to consider rolling your own, with a homemade coil, a slider for the coil, grab a polycon or air variable, a set of headphones. Now the decision, a pin and a piece of galena, or a razor blade... or dissimilar metal contact... and a long wire antenna... make it your self... or rather let him make it himself... with a lotta help, and watch his eyes light up when he hears things.

Nothing better than getting him started early working with his hands, and watching what he makes work, just like it is supposed to... well.. maybe after some adjustments.... but then even any of the Elecraft products need final checkout, and in some cases a bit of alignment too. But, they have all been built by folks that enjoy working with their hands.

While I agree that a regen kit would be a good receiver, remember that
this is for a 5 year old, and a regen receiver requires 'two handed'
tuning - one hand on the VFO knob and another on the regen control.  A 5
year old needs a single control receiver IMHO.

Good point Don, I hadn't thought of that. But then again, this kit could
double up as a motor-skill improvement device for the little one.
