Acquired a used W2 today and have the hardware hooked up and operating.
The W2 works just fine. Now I'm attempting to establish communications with the W2 from the PC, with no luck thus far. The PC is running Win 10 Home, 64 bit. I'm using the Elecraft USB cable plugged into the PC Data jack on the W2 and a USB2 port on the PC . When I plug the USB cable into the PC, Windows recognizes it and creates a new Com port. Next, I attempt to use the Elecraft W2 program to communicate with the W2, specifying the new Com port (Com9) in Setup. A message at the bottom of the Setup window says "Looking for a W2..." and it sits there that way forever. If I try the W2 Utility, it tells me that it has opened Com9 and is polling the W2 and that the W2 is not responding. A trace of activity on the Com9 port when using the W2 program shows Com9 opening and the program sending a semicolon repeatedly to the W2, but no responses at all. A check in Device Manager properties says the latest driver is installed for the W2 port and that driver level is 2.12.28.0 dated 8/16/17. Unable to check the firmware level with the W2 utility since the W2 doesn't respond. So, where to go from here? I suspect a driver problem, but it's not clear what to do about it. 73, Floyd - K8AC ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
Make sure you don't have multiple Com 9's. You may have some ghosted Com

There's only one Com9. Device Manager shows no dupes of any ports.
I've assigned a different port number, one that is an unused hardware port, with the very same results. On 3/6/2019 1:20 PM, Michael Walker wrote: > Make sure you don't have multiple Com 9's. Does the W2 require any power?

I use the W2 on 2 Win 10 computers without issue.
Ghosted Com ports can't be seen unless you do the following: 1.) Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click *Command Prompt*. 2.) At a command prompt, type the following command , and then press ENTER: *set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1* 3.) Type the following command a command prompt, and then press ENTER: *start devmgmt.msc* Troubleshoot the devices and drivers in Device Manager. 4.) Click *Show hidden devices* on the View menu in Device Manager before you can see all devices associated with the computer. 5.) Scroll down to the *Ports* section and you will be able to see all the hidden and unused COM ports. The hidden com ports have a grayed out icon next to them. 6.) To delete a particular port, click to highlight it and hit the *Delete* key on your keyboard. In the Confirm Device Removal dialog box, click *OK*. 7.) After you have deleted the unused and hidden COM ports, the list will show only those COM ports you use or may use in the future. Be careful not to delete com ports that are working properly. 8.) When you finish troubleshooting, close *Device Manager*. 9.)Type *exit* at the command prompt. *Note that when you close the command prompt window, Window clears the devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 variable that you set in step 2 and prevents ghosted devices from being displayed when you click Show hidden devices.* *Mike va3mw* On Wed, Mar 6, 2019 at 2:05 PM Bob Gibson via Elecraft < [hidden email]> wrote: > I have the same problem here with the W2.. Floyd,
The USB cable that the W2 uses has an FTDI chip in it. I agree with you, it does sound like a driver issue. Since you've determined that your Comm port driver is installed, It kinda sounds like you may not have an FTDI driver installed in your computer. I had the same problem with WIN10 on my computer. I went to the FTDI download site and obtained and installed the latest FTDI Chip drivers. All is well now. Anyway, it's just a thought. 73, Jim w4jba On 3/6/2019 12:07 PM, Floyd Sense wrote: > Acquired a used W2 today and have the hardware hooked up and > operating. The W2 works just fine.
