New Elecraft Product: K3/0-Mini Remote Front Panel

wayne burdick
Administrator
As you may already know, any K3 can control another one at a remote location. This allows you to have the experience of operating the radio, while taking advantage of great station locations with larger antenna arrays and other features.

Many K3 users operate this way exclusively, which is why we offer a cost-reduced K3, the K3/0. The K3/0 is the same size as the K3, but with all of the RF modules removed.

Now you have another choice: the K3/0-Mini. The Mini consists of a K3 front panel, only, so it's highly portable. When combined with a RemoteRig interface, the K3/0-Mini becomes a virtual K3 station you can take anywhere. The mini is perfect for home and travel use due to its small size. It fully duplicates all K3 controls, displays and menus for a realistic remote K3 experience.

The Mini has other features not found on the K3/0, including:

* Simplified RemoteRig Interfacing

Use a single RemoteRig interface cable for connecting the RemoteRig
to your K3/0 Mini. This cable contains all IO connections from the
RemoteRig (SP, MIC, PTT, PAD, KEY, RXd, TXd).

* More Connectors

Paddle, PTT and KEY inputs are now available both on the K3/0 Mini and RemoteRig.
3.5-mm audio connections on the side connect to your headset without the use of adapters.

* Built-in Stereo Speakers

A pair of internal speakers powered by their own audio amplifier for stereo (main/sub RX) audio.

* USB Port for firmware loading and/or software-based remote-control solutions

For further information, see:

  http://www.elecraft.com/K3-Remote/k3_remote.htm

The price of the K3/0-mini is $699.95, with first shipments in about 3 weeks.

73,
Wayne

We have updated the K3Remote page with the K3/0-mini. See:
http://www.elecraft.com/K3-Remote/k3_remote.htm

We are also adding more K3/0-Mini info to that page and it will be further updated in the next 15-30 minutes.

The ordering information is located in the K3Remote and K3/0 section of our order page. See:

GM all:

The link in Wayne’s announcement yesterday to the new K3/0 Mini introduced some new Remote Software.  I’m interested in more information on the KPA500 Remote Software.

Since approx Nov 2012, I’ve been controlling a remote KPA500 with the KPAUtil running on a Dell notebook at the local / control site over the transparent serial channel using COM1 facility of the RRC-1258 units.  How does the configuration and use of the new KPA500 Remote software differ?

Re: [Elecraft_K3] New Elecraft Product: K3/0-Mini Remote Front Panel

Doug Joyce
In reply to this post by Doug Joyce
Further to my message attached - I decided to download the KPA500 Remote Software and see if it would work just using the same transparent COM1 channel I had been using for the KPAUtil approach - and it seems to work just fine.  It only took a few seconds to cycle thru a number of Com ports until it found Com1 and connected to the remote KPA500.

The only minor glitch so far is that I tried out the Mini Mode display (which was ok) but when I switched back to the normal sized display, the “AMP ON” label at the bottom of the screen has been cut off.

This new software provides a much nicer display of the operating parameters and the bar graph presentation is much easier to read at a glance.  Looks like another very useful product from Elecraft.  Many Thanks

Thanks for the order!

And we've just added more K3/0 info to the K3 Remote page that includes rear and
side panel connection drawings and more information about the mini.

Re: New Elecraft Product: K3/0-Mini Remote Front Panel

Bill-3
Is it possible to use the new K3/0 Mini on a cable of several feet in
length to connect directly to my desk positioned K3 (allowing the front
panel to be moved around my operating desk - similar to the removable
faceplates found on several popular imported rigs)?

Thanks,

Bill W2BLC K-Line

If I change over to a K3/0 Mini for the remote control point, how about a
kit with all the parts required to upgrade my now unused K3/0 to a fully
functional K3?

It's not clear if the K3/0-Mini has RS232 or not. It appears to
connect to the RRC box with TTL, so maybe you'd have to build a
TTL-to-RS232 converter (shouldn't be difficult).

The next assumption would be that the firmware on the K3/0-Mini
operates the same as on the K3/0, in that you can invoke the remote
protocol by holding MENU until you see "TERM".

With the above assumptions, you should be able to get front-panel
controls, but you would not get remote audio or keying - that'd have
to be handled separately (if needed).

It'd be interesting to see a pin-out for the 15-pin connector on the
back of the K3/0-Mini.....

I suppose that's not needed (you do not need to do it on the "regular"
K3/0 afaik, it knows it's a "remote head").

Certainly wrong. Otherwise it would not work with the RemoteRig boxes,
too, as you connect CW key or paddle as well as mic directly to the K3/0
mini. ;-) Audio is transferred from the mini's 15 pin socket to the
RRC's AUX/MIC socket and speaker port. CW is routed to the I/O socket.
So yes, ALL needed signals must be available on the 15 pin socket. ;-)
See http://www.elecraft.com/K3-Remote/images/RRMINI%20Control%20Cabling.jpg

Not sure about RS-232 vs. TTL here, too. Let's see if Elecraft shines
in. But what's sure if you want to use the K3/0 mini locally, i.e.
without the RRC's, you'll have to make your own breakout cable to
connect to a local K3.

Even if you use it without RRC's? I believe that the RRC senses when
the K3/0 is powered on, and it is the RRC that initiates the remote
protocol, not the K3/0.... but I don't have a K3/0 (either) to verify
that assertion with.

I was just saying that connecting only the serial part would not be
sufficient for audio and keying to work - additional cabling (*at
least*) would be required for that.

For CW keying with a paddle, I believe that the keyer in the RRC is
used - NOT the keyer in the K3/0... so I'm not sure how you would do
remote paddle CW without the RRC. AFAIK, there is NOT code in the K3
firmware to accept paddle input and relay it over the serial
connection to the remote K3.

I've since heard a rumour that such a cable may become available from
Elecraft in the future ;)

Re: New Elecraft Product: K3/0-Mini Remote Front Panel

Rick Tavan N6XI
Although the Control RRC contains a keyer that connects to a paddle via the
PAD jack, you can also generate Morse locally with a hand key, external
keyer or computer and inject it via two pins on the Control RRC "IO" jack,
an RJ45. That's what I do using a computer and an external keyer so I can
send contest messages and do hand sending. The RRC generates a local
sidetone so what you hear is what you (will) get (a few msec later) out of
the actual transmitter.

Re: New Elecraft Product: K3/0-Mini Remote Front Panel

Bill-3
To effectively use the Mini on the desk in a "close to the operator"
position and the K3/100 at the back of the desk in its normal position
would require that only a single cable run from the Mini to the K3/100
be used. RX audio would be picked up from the K3/100 as normal and
key/mic inputs would also be directly to the K3/100. To do this any
other way would clutter the desk with too many wires. I don't think
using the Mini for this purpose was planned on - perhaps in the future.

In the interim, I am going to mount the K3/100 on a tracked and
rotatable shelf (visualize as drawer hardware with a lazy Susan on it)
with a total height of 3/4". I am a pretty good cabinet maker, so it
should finish well and look good whether pulled out or pushed back. A
proper cable tie job will be required, but that will eliminate some
other associated problems anyway. If it works well, I will save a lot of
money.

Correct.

The paddle input connections from the K3/0 mini are routed just to the
DB15 on it's back side to have a neat one cable solution between mini
and RRC. So you have the single dit and dah lines on dedicated pins on
the DB15 and can put that onto the paddle input of the
locally-to-be-remoted K3. Think of it as a cable extension. ;-) Same as
for mic and speaker as well as hand-key ...

When combined with a RemoteRig interface, the K3/0-Mini becomes a virtual K3 station you can take anywhere. The mini is perfect for home and travel use due to its small size. It fully duplicates all K3 controls, displays and menus for a realistic remote K3 experience.

To a limited degree (band, mode, AF gain, and several other primary controls). See page 28 of the KX3 owner's manual.

Bruce,

Did you get any response from Elecraft on this? If so what did they say?

Q: can the K3/0-Mini be connected directly to a K3, without the remote rig? This would allow relocating the K3 off the desktop, for limited-space installations.

Yes, it is possible, and we're working on a special cable for this.
