I've been trying to reload my DSP 1 and DSP 2 software as I've been getting error messages (ERR DSE, ERR DS2, etc. today on my K3 (serial #5528 built summer 2011).
While trying the reload I now get another message ticker-taping on my K3's display: "NEW K3 UTILITY SOFTWARE REQUIRED" How and where do I install this, please? Jeff, NH7RO |
Jeff,
That message is telling you that you are using an old version of K3 Utility, and that older version does not support the newer K3 firmware load. Just download the latest version of K3 Utility and all should be OK. Go to http://www.elecraft.com/K3/software/K3_Utility_Setup_1_4_10_11.exe to download it. In general, when you see something like this message, go to www.elecraft.com and you will find what is needed there. 73, Don w3FPR On 1/21/2012 7:02 PM, NH7RO wrote: > I've been trying to reload my DSP 1 and DSP 2 software as I've been getting > error messages (ERR DSE, ERR DS2, etc. today on my K3 (serial #5528 built > summer 2011). > > While trying the reload I now get another message ticker-taping on my K3's > display: > > "NEW K3 UTILITY SOFTWARE REQUIRED" > > How and where do I install this, please? > > Jeff, NH7RO > > Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

OK, Don, but I already uninstalled my original K3 utility and downloaded the latest version. I'm still getting the same message on my K3.
Perhaps I'll uninstall and reinstall eveything all over again. Pulling my hair out, too. It all started when I was operating split this morning to work VP6T on 12m, then I qsy'd to 10m to work them there and later noticed I couldn't hear anything on my sub receiver. Long story short I checked the config menu settings and then started getting the ERR DSE message there (E000202 and E05008d, too) and then the New K3 Utility message cropped up on my screen... Thanks for your help and any other comments/suggestions welcome. I'll post here as soon as I might be succesful (fingers crossed on the DSP2 upload!) 73, Jeff |
This could be data corruption while loading the DSP.
The DSP load frame contains a prefix and if that prefix is not what the MCU firmware's DSP loader expects, the MCU firmware may interpret the corrupted frame as an old DSP load protocol that we retired a few years ago and issue that diagnostic message on the K3 LCD front panel. If you have an alternate USB port on your computer, another computer, or USB-to-Serial adapter, give that a try. I'd reload all firmware if it were my radio. If you're using a laptop computer make sure it's plugged in while doing
updates. I found updates impossible using my shiny new Dell with the USB cable (FTDI) if it was not plugged in. 73 jim ab3cv ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Thanks for that; maybe the particular USB port is the culprit. Everytime I try downloading the DSP firmware I get almost all the way through THEN this error message shows up:
DSP1 firmware load failed. Error code: 0xE2000048: No response to poll while synchronizing to buffer boundary." I'll try a different USB port and try the whole thing again (perhaps the 7th or 8th time around so far). Will report back as soon as anything further develops. |
Tried a different USB port to no avail. (I am using a desktop PC with the Elecraft KUSB cable)
Tried a partial reset and reloading of the MCU which didn't end up changing anything. I still get the NEW K3 UTIL. SOFTWARE message. The DSP reload always fails. I'm about to do a FULL RESET and try and try again.... |
Jim, I am using the Sabrent CB-FTDI usb cable Elecraft sent me last summer.

Jeff, have you tried rebooting both your computer and the K3? Sometimes, once a USB or other port gets "gummed up", as it were, a complete reboot of the systems involved will clear the issue and allow you to continue whatever operation you are trying.
Hope this helps Ian Kahn, KM4IK Roswell, GA km4ik.ian@gmail.com K3 #281, P3 #688, KPA500 #? |
Yes, Ian; about 20 times for the K3 and three or four times for the computer. No difference.
Thanks for the suggestion anyway. Am trying to manually configure things now but it's taking 10-15 minutes just to set the 13kHz filter b/w to 13! (turning the tuning dial doesn't seem to have any effect; I'm beginning to think this radio is seriously sick) |
Now I have "No DVR" No ATU" and No sub-receiver" according to my display; this nightmare just gets worse and worse.
Am about ready to throw in the towel for today (I've been wrestling with this all day long; ever since I realized I couldn't hear the stations calling VP6T on the sub receiver---that was about 10:30am local and it's now about 7:30 in the evening)---I'm beat! Probably will have to call Elecraft come Monday morning and hope for the best. Thank you all who emailed and responded to my need for help---it is much appreciated. I may try another session of frustration tomorrow before I go to work in the late afternoon; at any rate as as soon as something works out I'll be back here to advise the forum. 73, Jeff |
This sounds like the FPF may not be updated. There are dependencies between
MCU, FPF, and DSP files that are released together. Have you loaded all firmware from a consistent set of version files (perhaps the production set on the Elecraft main web site), or are you trying to load the files independently? I think they're all from the same set as I uninstalled and reinstalled the K3 Utility from the website today. The version is 1.4.10.11 as far as I can determine. I'm not very computer savvy but I manage to stumble along fairly well most of the time. This problem has really got me stumped, though.
I was just about to uninstall everything again and start over when I saw your post. One thing I've noted is that the utility (or maybe it's the K3) says it doesn't recognize the version number of the dsp that I try downloading, even though it says 2.73 as already being installed. |
Let me suggest this: Don't reinstall the K3 Utility any more . You have a
current version. However, you might want to get fresh K3 firmware from the Elecraft FTP site. The K3 Utility does not include K3 firmware, it fetches firmware files from a web site and sends those files to the K3. Create a new empty folder (directory) somewhere on your computer, and use the Firmware tab's Browse button to navigate to that new empty folder. Click "Copy New Files From Elecraft". This should get the latest production (not beta) firmware from the Elecraft web site. Then click "Send All Firmware to K3", not "Send All New Firmware to K3". You'll get a complete set of firmware files that are intended to work together. >From your description, it sounds like the communications path from PC to K3 has become marginal, this is why we're suggesting different computer, different USB hub, different cable if you can. There is a long list of USB to serial adapter troubleshooting ideas in K3 Utility Help, I'm hoping that the answer to your problem is somewhere in there. But it's a really long list. I'd contact k3support at Elecraft dot com in the morning. There are some resistance and voltage checks that can be made to determine if the KIO3 is working properly. If you can always load a new MCU it sounds like the path is somewhat OK. The DSP load is a bit more demanding of clean communciations. Every day millions of users update phone apps, even their phone's OS, and their PC or Mac apps and OS, even their Mac firmware, over a lousy and intermittent connection. If the connection goes down in the middle, no problem - the error correction takes care of it. You can turn your machine off right in the middle and it will recover without error. It couldn't be otherwise; there's no way to explain to consumer users that the connection has to be solid. I realize it's more code on both ends, but I think this is something Elecraft should look at. 73, Tony KT0NY -- http://www.isb.edu/faculty/facultydir.aspx?ddlFaculty=352 ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

It is indeed amazing. We found a PIC32 knock off for an Arduino Uno for $26. Unfortunately or fortunately our engineering staff is quite small and enough of an existing code base that ports are non trivial.

Thanks for the suggestion; while I'm not too confident that I'll be successful doing that (I don't have much luck when it comes to creating folders and files and extracting this and that and such) I may give it a try or two and see what happens.
Late last night (I couldn't stop until after midnight I was so determined) I actually managed a successful load of all the firmware---even the DVR and both dsps loaded! The bad news is after some time spent in the CONFIG menu resetting the various parameters as I had them before---I started getting the ERR DSE error message again on the K3. Now it always says "E 010C 0C ERR DSE" when I power it up. I'm going to disconnect everything except the DC power cable and the KUSB cable and try it all over again just in case it'll save me shipping it off to Aptos this week. What worries me is that it's not so much the USB connection but some kind of failure or glitch in the DSP board (just my hunch; nothing more). Will try to report back before I head off to work in 5 or 6 hours from now... 73, Jeff |
