New User with some questions

gmuller885
Hello all:
I am the proud owner of a slightly used K-3 and P-3. The serial numbers are K3=SR# 3227 and the P3=SE#853.  First of all can any one tell me when these were made and how do I find out when they were purchased? Second how well does the automatic Antenna Tuner wor?. Third, I have a Heil Proset Elite head set. Where do I get the adapter for the head set to the K-3?  And last but probably not least what is a very good desk stand mike, not a hand held? Any and all legitimate help would be appreciated.

Hi Jerry....I'll take a shot.  See my responses below.

I suspect others with S/N's close to yours may respond.  A call to
Elecraft can probably get you a definitive answer.

The internal tuner has a very wide range and can tune most any practical
antenna.

Heil sells the adapter if you want to plug the microphone into the front
panel.  You want the AD-1-K..the "Kenwood" one. Alternatively, the
Proset Elite will plug directly into the rear panel on the K3. See pages
13, 20, 28, 47 and 52 of the manual.

The beauty of the K3 is that it microphone audio response can be
tailored to match nearly any voice or microphone characteristics. There
are ways to compensate for microphone output and selectable bias.  So
the K3 can use just about any microphone you find suitable and the audio
characteristics tailored to make it sounds great.

Personally, I'm a CW op so I wear headphones 100% of the time.  When I
have to operate phone I prefer a headset boom microphone.

Jerry,

I cannot answer about the P3, but the K3 was made sometime in 2009 as
best I can decipher from the serial number.

The KAT3 works very well, it will usually match an SWR of 10:1 - of
course that depends on the exact reactance at th shack end of the coax,
but the tuner itself is quite wide-range.

As for the Heil Proset - you can plug it directly into the rear mic and
phones jacks on the back of the K3 without an adapter (other than
possibly a 1/4 inch to 1/8 inch adapter for the phones).  If you want to
use the front mic jack (and headphone jack), you should obtain the Heil
Kenwood adapter.

As for the desk stand microphone, if you do not want to re-wire the mic
plug, get a Kenwood microphone.
If you are willing to re-wire the mic plug, then most any microphone you
like can be used.
